We have a busy version update to dive into. Let’s begin.

The ArcGIS for Excel 2025.1.0.0.34 release focuses on performance improvements, enhancing efficiency in processing and analysis. New features include the ability to add JSON files, apply layer effects like bloom and drop shadow, alongside new ArcGIS functions and Spatial aggregation (a new analysis tool).

Enhancements such as the option to save result layers to ArcGIS and UI/UX improvements have also been implemented.

Several bugs were fixed, including issues with attribute table access and sync functionality, while translation and localization bugs were addressed, contributing to overall user experience enhancements.

Errors, messages, and more

We are eager to introduce the ArcGIS for Microsoft errors, messages, and warnings online resource. It offers a list of errors, warnings, information, and validation messages you may encounter with ArcGIS for Microsoft 365 products.

New features

1. Ability to add geometries saved in JSON file

ShannonCardoza_0-1743456569200.png2. Layer effects: Bloom and drop shadow

3. ArcGIS Functions:  CONVERTTOESRIJSON, VERTICESTOESRIJSON, ENRICHBYPOLYGON, GETGEOMETRY

4. Spatial aggregation analysis tool:

Spatial Aggregation can be run on maps with two layers: one area layer with the boundaries will be used for aggregation (in this example, California Census track boundaries), and one layer to aggregate (in this example, California Golf courses).

The aggregation output will provide a sum or count of golf courses per census track.

Navigate to the layer’s pop-up to see further details from the spatial aggregation.

Fixed bugs

  • BUG-000161583 2D polylines constructed by JSON strings greater than 1024 characters will create corrupted feature classes when published as feature classes to the ArcGIS Enterprise portal
  • BUG-000173632 Removal of the table format when 'Sync with ArcGIS' is performed
  • BUG-000172999 It is not possible to open the attribute table of a feature service in Excel if the user has only the user type Contributor. The following message comes: Additional permissions are required. Contact your organization's administrator
  • BUG-000170463 Attribute table cannot be accessed when the user's member role is not at least a Publisher role
  • BUG-000173417 Maps in ArcGIS for Excel with a designated Map Scale in Map Viewer or Home Extent in ArcGIS for Excel fail to open to the specified extent
  • BUG-000174367 Sync data returns error when the worksheets in ArcGIS Excel are hidden
  • Export map blocked by pop-up blocker
  • When adding a web map created from Survey123 Form, the message 'layer view requires a layer with query capability' doesn't display.

Quality of Mapping

The user interface has undergone substantial improvements to render it more intuitive and user-friendly. The layout has been optimized to enable easier access to essential functions, thereby reducing the learning curve for novice users while simultaneously enhancing productivity for experienced users.

  • UI/UX polishes

Till next time

Hi Shannon,

Thanks for the update. Did this role out yesterday as I've noticed that my map has stopped loading as of yesterday in a couple of my spreadsheets. I keep getting the "The basemap is unavailable or has been deleted from the server." error, as below. If I select reset map it just gets stuck loading the map. I do seem to be able to open up the map in a new spreadsheet and some of my existing ones work but would there be anything preventing the others from working?

Thanks,

Anthony

Good morning @AnthonyJonesRSK

Appreciate you reaching out! This should not have anything to do with the update. The update technically rolled out Thursday, March 27th. We typically see this happen when a map was created in an internet environment and reopened offline. Are you using an offline version and/or using Portal/Enterprise?

You may try a few options depending on your circumstances. (1) Try switching to a default basemap configured in the portal, (2) close the spreadsheet on this machine, and re-open the spreadsheet on another machine with an internet connection. (3) Lastly, if the basemap was custom and possibly deleted, try restoring the deleted basemap.

All the best,

SC

Hi Shannon,

Thanks for the quick response on this. In my case I'm not using an offline version and we use ArcGIS Online.

The issue is odd as I've never changed the base map in the map as I'm just accessing some feature tables in my spreadsheet. The base map is just the default topographic one and this opens fine when I open the ArcGIS add-in in a new spreadsheet. I asked my colleague to open the same spreadsheet and she gets the same issue.

Is there anything else that could be causing the issue?

Thanks

Anthony

Good morning @AnthonyJonesRSK,

I hope you had your coffee already!

I have some additional suggestions. (1) Can you check to see if there are any console errors about any basemaps failing to load? Using Fiddler or the browser's developer tools. (2) Can you share your Excel workbook? We now have the option to send a direct message on the Esri Community site. (3) Lastly, if you'd like to work with a Support Service analyst, you could call our team and see if they can troubleshoot with you. The number for tech support is 1-888-377-4575.

All the best,

SC

Hi Shannon,

Thanks again for your response. I'm based in the UK so am more of a stereotypical tea drinker!

Thanks for your suggestions. I've used the inspect tool on the map and can see a number of errors (see screenshot below). Is there any use in sending you some of the json files that have been generated?

Unfortunately I can't really send the spreadsheet as we're using it to manage our AGOL users so it contains a lot of sensitive data. I can raise a ticket with our support team in support team at Esri UK but just wondered if this was something you had maybe seen before?

Thanks

Anthony

Good morning @AnthonyJonesRSK

Sorry for the delay! I have seen this error message and/or workflow come up before. I have only seen it in the scenarios where I wanted you to troubleshoot further. Bummer, those did not help. Sometimes things go haywire, and resetting the map is the only path forward. I would encourage you to open a support ticket to troubleshoot further if resetting the map isn't an option.

All the best,

SC

Hey There, I am experiencing the same exact thing with my base map. My business partner and I had been working on writing formulas that link one sheet to the dynamic feature layer sheet we added from the map and ArcGIS Online. It seems as though something with that process broke our base map. We basically had to rebuild the entire workbook which was extremely frustrating as all the cells and formulas worked great and changed when we filtered the feature layer sheet in excel however the map would just not show up. Same thing, works on basically any other excel i open, just isolated to this one workbook that got corrupted. I have cleared out my local Microsoft cache so I basically log in for the first time however even after i clear my cache the base map still throws the error.

By chance @AnthonyJonesRSK,  did you add the attribute table to your workbook then link another sheet to the dynamic attribute table? I am wondering if it occurs when one sheet or cell tries to access the attribute table via a formula.

Hi @DanielBettinger ,

Afraid not. I just saw the error on a few of our spreadsheets and it appeared to coincide with the update. I haven't applied any formulas or linked any other tabs to the attribute table.

I raised it with Esri support and they weren't able to get to the bottom of it either and have just suggested I rebuild my spreadsheets which is not great. I haven't done this yet but are you suggesting even after the rebuild you're still seeing the error?

Thanks

Anthony

Hello @AnthonyJonesRSK

I know the workaround isnt ideal (rebuilding worksheet). Any chance you can share your data so we can troubleshoot further? There is the direct message option you would be able to share with me there.
