All,

I have a Google Pixel 7 running Android 16 that I'm trying to use Field Maps on. Yesterday, I was able to open the app and maps, but was running into an issue with a map that I created using the Field Maps Designer. During troubleshooting, I uninstalled/re-installed the app. Now, every time I tap on the Field Maps app button, it brings up the blue Field Maps app screen but immediately closes. I can't do anything. I've tried the following:

  • clear cache
  • check for updates
  • uninstall app/re-start phone/re-install app
    • After re-install, I can open the app to sign into my organization's account, but once I've logged in, the app closes
  • uninstall app, install Field Maps Beta
    • Same behavior
  • Testing on a different phone: Pixel 8a, Android 16
    • Works as expected
  • Disconnecting from Wi-Fi and use cellular data only
    • Same behavior

Anyone know what might be the issue? I fixed the initial problem with the map I created using Field Maps Designer--I just deleted the map, created the layer in ArcPro, uploaded to ArcOnline, and created a map there.

Annina

Thanks for the instructions! I was able to run the debugger and I successfully uninstalled Field Maps. I reinstalled BUT...still have the issue. 😞

Gah was hoping that would do the trick. Hopefully Support has some other ideas. I will keep an eye on the open case.

  1. If your device is low on RAM or storage, it can cause apps to crash, especially ones that require a lot of memory (like Field Maps).
  2. Try freeing up some storage space and closing other running apps to ensure enough resources are available.
  3. Android Jelly Bean API 16 is quite old, and newer versions of Field Maps may be optimized for more recent versions of Android.
  4. If possible, consider updating your Android operating system. While Android 16 may still work for some apps, the app may not be optimized for older versions anymore.
  5. The Field Maps working well.Field Map Apps.png

Thanks, but I'm still having issues:
I. I have 97 GB memory available, so it shouldn't be due to this. Plus, I was able to use the app 2 days ago.
II. All other apps are closed.
III/IV. I can't update my Android OS; it says it's up to date. My other device, a Pixel 8a, is running Android 16, too, and the app works fine there.
V. I was able to use Field Maps Designer to create a map with a brand-new layer. Unfortunately, FMD created some sort of hidden field or setting that didn't allow for the collection of data either on a browser or in the Field Maps app (on the working device). This is what started this whole issue. Since I wasn't able to collect data, I thought there might have been some setting persisting in the app, so I uninstalled/re-installed, and that's when it started crashing. I ended up deleting the map and layer, created a new layer in ArcPro and served it to ArcOnline, added it to a new map, and finally was able to collect data in both a browser and in the Field Maps app (on the working device).

@AnninaRupe1

Please consider a factory reset of your mobile: if Field Maps crashes due to device related issues, a reset may fix it. However, if the crash is caused by map data problems, app bugs, server issues, or incorrect configuration, a reset won’t help. Similarly, if using a form template doesn’t solve the issue, creating a feature class/web layer and domains in ArcGIS Pro won’t fix it either.

If you do not mind, could you kindly share a copy of the screenshot of the crash?

I am unable to give a screenshot. After I tap on the app button the Field Maps splash screen appears for less than a second and closes.

Have you contacted Esri tech support yet?  Is anyone else reading this thread having issues with the same device, device OS, Field Maps version, ArcGIS Online combo?
If your phone automatically updated to Android 16, I would guess this caused these issue and would explain why it worked on Monday, but not on Tuesday when this was rolled out...

There may a be a bug that tech support can help get logged and start working towards a patch/update for the Android app.
