My present PC is as follows:
OS:  Win XP Prof Version 2002 SP 3
Dell Precision T7400
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU
X5472 @ 3.00GHz
2.99 GHz 3.25 GB of RAM

Issue:  I uninstalled 9.3.1 and installed AGS 10 & SP1 by copying the CD contents to my hard drive and ran the installation.  I attempted to view metadata inside arcmap on shapefiles and GDB SDE layers.  I was able to view it inside arcmap arccatalog under item description and in TOC.  I then attempted to view it inside ArcCatalog under the description tab and it was grayed out.  When I attempted to view it again in arcmap, the white item description box under TOC metadata was blank and the item description box was grayed out in arcmap catalog.  It never allowed me to view metadata in either application after that.  When I logged into another co-workers PC, I was able to view metadata without issue in AGS 10 w/SP1.  When that co-worker logged into my PC he was able to view metadata without issue.  His PC is as follows:

OS:  Win XP Prof Version 2002 SP 3
Dell Precision 390
Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 CPU
6300 @ 1.86GHz
1.86 GHz, 3.50 GB of RAM

I was able to reproduce the issue on my PC on another co-worker's PC that shares specs with my own PC and he experienced the same issue exactly using AGS 10-SP1.  Our co-worker whose PC is listed above logged into that PC and was able to view metadata without issue.  The problem seems to be a combination of who is logged in and what PC they are using.  It is not exclusively a profile issue nor an installation issue since the software will work for some users but not others.  I am at a loss to understand what is happening.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
John

The issue was resolved by the creation of a new user profile on my PC.  Not sure why the software error took the same exact form on two different PCs with similar specs for two different users, but there you have it.  If you experience something odd with your software, try creating a new profile.
