Hi all,

Apologies for the "newbie" question...but I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to make labels in ArcGIS.  Basically, I have a zip-code shapefile overlaying the bingmaps basemap.  All i want is for the zip codes themselves to be visible. I figured out how to show the zip code when I roll the mouse over the area in question (pop-up "tips") but it immediately disappears. How can i make these pop-ups FREEZE there for printing??

thanks so much!

Hi,

ArcGIS Explorer does not support permanent labelling of features in a shapefile. Labelling, as well as more sophisticated symbology, is supported through layer files and layer packages - which in this case need to be created using ArcMap (ArcGIS Desktop & not free).

Unless you have access to ArcGIS Desktop then I'd recommend the Feature Labeller Add-in hosted on the ArcGIS Explorer Labs group as a possible workaround for your problem. Just Click on Open to download and install the Add-in from this webpage, then with ArcGIS Explore rrunning select your layer, then go to the Add-ins tab and click Feature Labeller to open it.
