Cached map services appear blurred (2D View) when viewed in AGX 1200

Hi,

I believe i may know the answer for this issue but appreciate if someone can clarify my guesses.

I have locally published cached services that when consumed through ArcGIS Explorer (1200) they appear of poor quality (e.g. blurred or resampled).

I believe this issue is likely due to the fact that ArcGIS Explorer is resamping the already cached image & thus resulting in loss of quality; further to this i also believe AGX zoom levels will not in sync with the cached services (or rather they are unlikely to be);

Q :  Can someone confirm this is the cause of the issue and if so is there a reccomended approach to avoid this;  Even if your zoom scale matched the cached services zoom levels, does AGX STILL resample the cached sevices?  If so, is there a way to avoid this?

Brad,

You may want to try adjusting the coordinate system in ArcGIS Explorer.  If it is reprojecting the service that will have the biggest impact.  In general mapservices work best in ArcGIS Explorer 2D if the ArcGIS Explorer coordinate system (set in map properties http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisexplorer/1200//en/map_properties_coordinate_systems.htm) is the same as the services coordinate system.   This results in the sharpest and fastest display.

Hi Mark, thanks of the input.... The config you have suggested is already applied.

Are you able to clarify my queries as to whether ArcGIS Explorer will resample irrespective of the consumed service (cached or dynamic) for 2D?  I also note that even dynamic services do not appear clear for both the map features or the labelling.

Brad,

For cached and dynamic services, your map display (2D) and the service should ideally both be in the same coordinate system (e.g. British National Grid, or if overlaying with ArcGIS Online services, WGS1984 Web Merc Aux Sphere).

With cached services, for best appearance, you should choose PNG8 or PNG24 (assuming your service contains largely vector data) and check the option to apply anti-aliasing.

With dynamic services you should see reasonably crisp lines/text until you zoom in to very large scales. I've just done some quick tests here with a cached service using PNG24 and anti-aliasing and both dynamic and cached appear to be of similarly good quality.

You may see a small amount of rasterisation of the map display due to the way in which seamless panning is provided in 2D.

For advice on planning a map cache please see http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisserver/10.0/help/arcgis_server_dotnet_help/index.html#/Tips_and_best....
