Show which layers are turned on

I think a great addition to the map layers widget would be to have an option to show users which layers are turned on.  

In a map with hundreds of layers it would be nice to see something like this:

So that layers are grouped, and under each group you can see checked and unchecked layers, but also there's a section specifically saying what layers are currently turned on.
