Elevation Profile Widget - Reference polygon feature information under elevation profile line

Hello everyone.
I have another idea for the elevation profile widget that a customer of mine suggested.
They'd like to know which soils they'd find along an elevation profile. Considering that there's a soil polygon feature availaible, it should be possible to represent this soil information with different colours within the elevation profile.
Maybe this idea is already possible, but I couldn't mange to do it. The only idea I had is convert the polygon borders into lines so the are intersected along the profile (as you can do with other lines), but the process is tedious, unreliable and not aesthetically pleasing.
