How to Connect ArcGIS Desktop in Azure to On-Premise SQL Server Enterprise Geodatabase?

I am trying to get ArcGIS Desktop (ArcGIS Pro) on an Azure VM server to connect to a SQL-based Enterprise Geodatabase on our on-premise network.

The main issue I'm encountering is understanding which ports need to be opened on the Azure and on-premise servers.

Specific questions:

  • What ports need to be opened on Azure server? (uni or bi-directional)?
  • What ports need to be opened on on-premise SQL server? (uni or bi-directional)?

Thanks for any assistance.

The main SQL Server / Enterrprise Geodatabase port is 1433, and the on-prem network would need to allow inbound traffic on that port.

I do want to caution setting up this connection as there will be network latency from the cloud to your servers on-prem. The best practice is to collocate the installs of the desktop client and the data for the best experience.
