Error: “Packaging succeeded, but publishing failed”,

I couldn’t figure out why I’m getting the error below

“Packaging succeeded, but publishing failed”

This error appears when I tried to overwrite publish the services.,and i used ArcMap & ArcGIS Server 10.5

What might be the issue here?

Thank you

Best,

Rawan

There are numerous posts on this issue in and out of GeoNet community.

Since this issue comes while overwriting the service, stop the corresponding map service before overwriting it.

If that doesn't work out, maybe you could provide the error details in GP results window.

Close all ArcGIS Applications.

After stopping ArcGIS Server service in services.msc,

delete the lock files in the following directory

<ArcGIS Server installation directory>\directories\arcgissystem\locks>

If the lock files get deleted successfully, start ArcGIS Server service from services.msc and then open ArcCatalog/ArcMap and stop the desired service.

We have this issue all the time with ArcGIS Server....although we are at a lower version 10.2.  We have two solutions:  1) restart the ArcGIS Server service on the hosting service.  2) If #1 doesn't work, restart the server.  This works 95% of the time, but I don't know why.  One time we had an odd event where the Systems folder in ArcGIS Server was locked down.  Not sure how that happened, but once we unlocked it, we could publish services again.

Dear Stephanie Snider,

Thank you for your answer, actually we do the same all time.

Sometimes it’s working fine and sometime it doesn’t .

There must be a solution for that provided by Esri or enhancement on the newer releases.

Hi All,

I tried a workaround to solve this issue and it’s working fine, but this workaround needs to stop the ArcGIS Server which means that the online application will be down.

You can follow these steps to solve this:

  1.      stop the ArcGIS Server service in services
  2.      delete the lock files in the following directory “C:\arcgisserver\directories\arcgissystem\locks”
  3.      Restart the ArcGIS Server Services.
  4.      Publish overwrite the service and it will be published properly

Good to know that things are working now. I also pointed out the same workaround (See my comment above). It worked for me as well.
