Error connecting from ArcCatalog to an exisintg GIS server causes error

From within ArcCatalog I am unable to make a GIS server connection to view my services.  I can get access to them through the server manager but not from my desktop environment.

The server is up and running.  I can view my web app on the server (locally) but as soon as i try and get to the server or web app I get this error message. 

Any ideas?

If you have Web Adaptor installed and are using Web Tier authentication you can get this or a similar error. Switch to GIS Server

Bubba is correct. That error is received when web tier authentication is turned on and a connection is made in catalog via port 6080. If you turn on web tier authentication, you must use the web adaptor URL to connect. Thanks-
