Questions about Automatic Backup During Portal Upgrade Process

Hello everyone!

In the portal upgrade documentation(https://enterprise.arcgis.com/en/portal/11.0/install/windows/upgrade-portal-for-arcgis.htm), Esri recommends ensuring there is sufficient disk space to support automatic backups during the upgrade process:To ensure you have enough disk space to support the automatic backup created during the upgrade, determine the amount of space allocated to the portal's content, index, db, and temp directories. Validate that the amount of free space available on disk is at least 2.5 times this amount. If not, allocate at least 2.5 times more space on disk. The portal upgrade needs this free space to successfully back up and upgrade your portal's content, site information, and security settings. The default location for these directories is C:\arcgisportal.

I conducted testing for upgrading the portal and found that during the portal upgrade process, the "upgrade-backup" directory generated by Portal only occupied 1x space, instead of the documented recommendation of occupying 2.5x space.

My first question is, Why are my test results so different from the documentation? Is it necessary to reserve 2.5 times the available disk space?

My second question is, the default upgrade-backup directory generated during the upgrade process is located within the arcgisportal directory. In many cases, it is not feasible to increase the disk space of the arcgisportal directory. Can the location of the upgrade-backup directory be modified?

Thank you!

Based on our experience, it's best to have 2.5x the available disk space but results may vary. Portal can quickly consume large amounts of disk space during general usage as well as during upgrades, and the recommendation comes out of an abundance of caution. If your Portal doesn't contain much content, you may be able to get away with allocating less disk space as you found in your testing. Having more available disk space is not always a bad idea, to help accommodate system growth.

Can the location of the upgrade-backup directory be modified?

Yes, but only if the software is reinstalled. Once that folder structure is set during the installation process, it's not possible to move that directory after the fact. If disk space was running low, you would need to allocate more space to the entire C drive or contact Esri / an Esri Business Partner to help with a migration effort.
