High Portal content views

Hi All

Hit an issue with a reasonably new install of 11.5 around content views.

Web maps, apps and experiences are all hitting thousands of 'views' per item, when the item is private (not publicly shared), in some cases not even actually viewed (literally uploaded a day or two) yet has 11000 hits.

Additional info:

  • ArcGIS Monitor 2025.1 installed and running
  • Portal (and the rest of the Enterprise) installed in Azure (on a set of VM's)

Clearly something is amiss, including our KPI's 😫

Any help would be appreciated....

Thanks

What about the services within your maps and apps, do they have thousand of hits as well?
You need to figure out if this just a bug in the counting mechanism or suspicious behaviour...

Hi Simon and thanks for the response.

The services are all relatively small (couple of hundred hits at most), whereas its almost exclusively the web maps, apps etc hitting between 2-12k in comparison.....

Good. This points more to a counter issue, but I´d recommend still staying vigilant for suspicious activities.
Check the logs for activities.

Are the counter numbers in Portal (Item Details) the same as in ArcGIS Monitor?

Monitor doesn't seem to count the maps / apps / experiences......so hard to compare

Do you have any Python API scripts that perform inventory or maintenance operations on your Portal? I've noticed that, for example, digging into the layers of a web map with the API for Python will count as a view.

No, but this has made me think that maybe Monitor hitting them could be artificially increasing the views...... 🤔
