Allow map services to be published with a version number. This is already possible for Image Services using the Image Server extension. This may allow more graceful handling of any present or future inability for a particular release of a client (e.g. ArcMap or ArcGIS Explorer) to consume a map service published from a particular release of ArcGIS Server.
