I am brand new to ArcGIS Personal. A forester friend emailed me a layer file of several different maps, and he said I would need to install ArcGIS to be able to see them. I did install Arc GIS Personal (my company is a big ArcGIS user, but I just see the end product) but I cannot figure out how to view the layer file. Would someone please explain how I can view a file ?   Thanks !

Hello,

When you said you installed ArcGIS Personal, are you referring to ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro? Can you send a screenshot of what the layer file looks like? Is it a .lyr file type?

Thanks!

Hi Luba,

The layer file is definitely a .lyr file.

For my ArcGIS Personal, I don't know if it's ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro. Maybe

that's my problem. Should I try to sign up for one of those ?

I did install the GisEarth app. Should I be opening the layer file in this

app ? Or should I be opening the layer file somewhere else ?

Thanks for your help !

Hi Bob,

I'm not too familiar with GisEarth app so maybe someone can hop into the conversation about if it's possible to view a layer file in the app.

If you have access to a personal license then you should be able to use ArcGIS Pro under this license. I will privately message you now so we can figure out what you're licensed for.
