SQL Check can't access SDE SHAPE.LEN field

I'm building a SQL check that compares a manually entered length to the Shape.Len.  This works fine in a file gdb but when the workspace is in SDE, I can no longer access the Shape Length field.  Am I missing something or is this a limitation of PLTS?

At this time the status of Bug ID : 4451 is "New". The tentative planned fix version has not yet been determined.

thank you. my issue is 9.3.1 sp2.  is this a bug in 10 as well?
