Currently dashboards does not preserve map extent of web map set in Map Viewer, and does not allow user to set desired map extent in Dashboard editor. Therefore, this idea is requesting the ability to define the default map extent of a web map in Dashboards, within the Dashboard settings. Bookmarks defined in a web map do carry over to map in Dashboards, but default extent does not. If Dashboards could preserve the default map extent in Map Viewer, that would help. But ideally, map extent could be configured specifically for the Dashboard, without changing the default map extent of the web map for other applications.
The work around is to go back and forth from Map Viewer to Dashboard settings to set a default map extent that displays as desired in Dashboards. There doesn't seem to be a clear relationship between the two, so it takes much trial and error. This is inefficient and does not allow for clear control of desired display. Moreover, if web map is used in other applications, or map extent is changed for some reason, the map extent in the Dashboard will be changed. When Dashboard is public facing, this creates poor user interface.
Another nice thing would be to be able to configure layer pop-ups in the dashboard. I've got two dashboards that use the same map and layers, but one is for public use where I dont want to include the pop-up with detailed information. It would be nice if I didnt have to make two separate web maps and essentially re-create the same dashboard.
