Offline map download failure Error: 'Feature table must have a spatial reference to store features with geometry'

Having difficulties with downloading offline maps in Collector. The trouble shooting log gives the following message "Feature table must have a spatial reference to store features with geometry." 

My current workflow for creating maps is:

Create file geodatabase for project site (using ArcMap desktop)

Create feature classes

Add GNSS fields using CollectorUtils Toolbox (need to be able to reference to NAVD88 in pop ups)

Zip file geodatabase and upload to AGOL as hosted feature layer

Create AGOL map and add hosted feature layer

Check all the boxes required for allowing map to go offline (layer and map)

In Collector the option to download offline areas is there, but essentially fails immediately. 

We're using AGOL/Collector with high accuracy survey equipment through EOS for projects in several areas with essentially zero cell service, so really need to get these working. I feel like I've tried everything and I'm just hoping that there is something super obvious that I'm missing to get these up and running.

When you check the properties of the feature class that you've created, what do you see under the XY Coordinate System tab?  Do the features have a valid projection set?

The feature classes are set up in WGS 1984 World Mercator.

OK, I would try two things - first, add a 'test' feature to each feature class before publishing, and also try publishing a service to ArcGIS Online through ArcMap rather than doing the file upload (Publish to ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise—Publish services | Documentation)

Success! I added a test feature to each layer in AGOL and saved the map and just got a successful downloaded area. I don't really know why that would solve the issue, but I'll take it.
