Confusing related tables workflow

Related tables support has been a great addition to collector and I'm starting to incorporate it into a few projects. The issue I have is that the workflow to create a record and then add a related record to it is confusing.

An example being a signs data collection project. The user has to create a point for the sign pole, then find that newly created point on the map click on it and then add a related record. Why can't you collected a point and add a related record to it at the time within the one form (similar to how Arcpad does it)? Hopefully I'm missing something obvious here.
