Is there a way to find a place, similar to the Google Maps api.  I Would like to have the users put something in like "flatirons mall" and then get a list of results.

You need to use a Gazetteer service or a locator service such as this one : http://tasks.arcgis.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/WorldLocator/GeocodeServer/findAddressCandidates

Not working with 'Flatirons mall' though. Would need a more specialized service.

I am using the bing geocode service and that works ok.  it is not as good as the Google maps geocode service but I cannot get that to work with a not Google maps application.

Hey,

I use the gnis from usgs (this is a point feature class for geographic names) and it works well.  Just search on a name and it will return the geometry for the point.
