Search Widget Modifications

I am hoping someone can give advice on some modifications to the out of the box search widget in the SFV 2.1.

I would like for the search bar to be auto-populated with a list of the unique values in that field.  Meaning if the search widget is set up to search for property owners last names then the list would contain all the unique last names.  Also, has anyone implemented some type of auto-complete when typing?  Is it possible to implement a wild-card in the search?  These features would greatly enhance the search widget!

I have tried with the autocomplete component from Hillel Coren http://hillelcoren.com/flex-autocomplete/ but it took to long time to load the 30 000 records (7 seconds). The component can work with wildcards. An other issue was that the component became case sensitive when using non-english characters. And the Flex 4 version is still (stuck) in beta. Other than that i work very well and was very adaptable and powerful component.
