How do you detect drawtool created self-intersecting polygon in Flex?

I want to prevent users from adding self-intersecting polygons using the polygon drawtool in Flex.  Is there any way to detect the self-intersecting polygon before I try to add it to the SDE layer?  If I don't detect the self-intersecting polygon, the add to SDE through the Rest feature service fails and the application ends up in an unusable state.

You can call the GeometryService.simplify() method to correct for this.
