The launch of the Africa GeoPortal in 2019 gave GIS users who live in or work on topics related to Africa a robust platform connecting the geospatial community. The platform, powered by Esri technology, comes with content from ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World that is specially curated so it relates directly to Africa, this is in addition to valuable community-contributed data. The idea behind this community portal is to inspire its diverse set of users to build and expand on each other's work.

With the SDSN Sustainable Development Report 2025 about to be launched, AND THE ESRI USER CONFERENCE about to open, it may be timely to reinvigorate this discussion group.  Allow me to urge anyone interested in global development, especially if you have never found any actively montored entryways to get involved prior to now, to post your thoughts as well as countries you are seeking to get involved with, and if known the SDG, its target or indicator you may already have expertise with.

For those of you who are still searching for the 2025 SD Report, here is a link to help you download it - click SDSN 2025 Sustainable Development Report

Importantly, global cooperation and a strong UN system are indispensable to implement a better world for all.  I urge mappers to learn about the SDG Transformation Center of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

Helping countries to support UN-based multilateralism (UN-MI), means agreeing to principles established in the UN Charter in 1945. Six indicators:

  • UN treaty ratification,
  • United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) votes with the international majority,
  • Membership in UN organizations,
  • Participation in conflicts and militarization,
  • Use of unilateral coercive measures against other Nation-States, and
  • Contribution to the UN budget and international solidarity.

The database of the Sustainable Development Report 2025 contains the SDG Index rankings, overall scores, spillover scores, dashboards and trends for all 17 SDGs and all 100+ indicators. The Codebook sheet lists indicator metadata and sources.  It can be downloaded into Excel format, and provide hours of involvement for those interested in geolocating data.

Probably haven't given enough time to go through the 492 pages of the 2025 Sustainable Development Report (download it by opening this link sustainable-development-report-2025  ) I'm on page 239 - KENYA Performance by Indicators.

Books for Africa notified us today that a 40 foot container with 30,000+ books has arrived at the Port of Mombasa.   I also received this email from the Kenyan NGO I have been collaborating with that they are "...overjoyed to hear and receive this good news today  that the container of books has safely arrived in Kenya .   It is a powerful investment in the future of Kenyan learners. These books will not only support education across all levels, but they will also inspire a new generation of readers, thinkers, and leaders. At Safina, we are ready to roll up our sleeves. Together with the Safina team and our dedicated volunteers, we will be organizing, distributing, and integrating these resources into schools and community centers. But that’s just the beginning.

We are excited to take this further  using our skills in digital mapping and story telling to track the journey of these books and the impact they make. With various tools in GIS , we will share real stories of transformation, powered by education, across Bomet County and beyond. This effort will not only bring visibility to the communities you’ve helped but will also allow other young professionals and students — both in Kenya and abroad — to see how they can take part in creating change. Words alone can’t capture how grateful and excited we are but through our actions, we’ll turn this joy into real, lasting change."

I can wait to be posting story maps from readers, and hope members of this platform who want to get involved in achieving successful SDG outcomes to get involved.
