Layer 3D to Feature Class

Hi all,

I'm attempting to do some analyses similar to that in the attached link.

http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Assessing_a_steam_pipe_explosion_in_an...

Specifically, I'm interested in determining what areas in building are within a certain distance of AEDs.  My issue arises when I try to use the Layer 3D to Feature Class geoprocessing tool on my point data that is displayed as a sphere.  When I do this, the multipatch is created, but is not displayed as a sphere.  Cannot seem to find a solution anywhere on the web so I came here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ben,

Are you using the 3D Layer to Feature Class tool in ArcMap or ArcScene?  The tool uses the 3D layer properties and creates the multipatch.  In ArcMap there are no 3D properties, so the resulting multipatch would be flat.  You will need to run the tool in ArcScene with the 3D properties applied to the layer.

This still does not work in 10.2.1.  In ArcScene running 3D Layer to Feature Class tool on a feature layer that has been extruded returns a FLAT multipatch.

I just tested this at 10.2 and 10.2.1 and it works for me.  I extruded a polygon layer by 100 and then ran the Layer 3D to Feature Class tool.  Here are my results:

Can you provide a sample of the data you are using?

This has been solved - the tool does not work when background geoprocessing is turned on.

I can confirm that in version 10.2.1 this tool does not work when background geoprocessing is turned on and it does work when it is turned off.

Some users on GIS SE hinted that this bug has been addressed in 10.2.2 but I've seen at least one post indicating otherwise.

It's becoming a good practice to NEVER turn on background geoprocessing.  Something is clearly broken there.
