In ArcGIS using any of the extensions, I want to do the following:

From a given point on the terrain, create a horizon. By horizon, I mean the farthest visible point in any direction. I want to sample such 360 points (1 degree interval) around the given point, each representing the farthest point visible in that direction. Is this possible?

(I did some googling and found that some people call this "skyline" - though it is normally used in context of creating city skyline. I am interested in just the topographic horizon - I will appreciate any inputs. Thanks!)

Thanks!

Greetings,

The Skyline tool is what you want to use.  This tool is only used in context of creating a city skyline if you input building features; which is optional.  If no building features are specified, then the skyline will consist solely of a ridgeline (horizon line). When only observer points are provided, the horizon line is generated by casting a line of sight from the observer covering the azimuth range specified in the azimuth options.  The default azimuth options are 0-360 with increments of 1 degree.

Best,
Eric

Thanks, Eric. I hope there is an API for this as well so that I can extract the skyline polyline points.
