I am once again disappointed in ArcScene, which feels like it should still be in beta mode.

It appears that you cannot group groups of layers in ArcScene. I am used to grouping layers, and grouping groups of layers (2 levels) in ArcMap, to organize files and make it easier to turn themed layers and/off all at once. I can't believe that you cannot do this in ArcScene.

I can group layers together, but not cannot group groups of layers. nice.

It's hard to understand why functionality that is built in ArcMap is not built into ArcScene.

(and this is just one functionality that is not present in ArcScene....There is also not shortcut for turn all the layers on/off, nor to expand/collapse all layers at once either. Also, no North arrow like functionality so that one can orient themselves.....pfff)

Sorry for the rant! I am just feeling frustrated!

Grouping layers in ArcScene does work.  I have no problem grouping the layers in ArcGIS 10 SP 3. Be sure that in the table of contents you have selected 'List by Drawing Order' in order to see the group layers.  Also if you want to be sure you are using the Beta ArcScene, please look into joining the 10.1 Beta program.  I sure you when you are working in ArcScene there, you will be using the 'Beta' product.

There is a trick to seeing the group layers in ArcGlobe, but ArcScene has no difficulty.

Hi,

Thanks for your response jbswain....I am aware that groupin works. What I cannot seem to do is group a few groups together. (very useful if one is using dwg/dxf layers) So, I am curious, can you group two groups (second level grouping)?

It now seems that you can once I have learned the trick.  Please take a look below.

No at ArcGIS you cannot nest the group layers together.

Hi jbswain,

I don't mean to contradict, but you can nest group layers in ArcMap. I do it all the time...but just to make sure, I just double checked. See screenshot.

After some help with Eric, I have been able figure out how to group the group layers.  The key was to create the Group Layer in the Table of Contents first and then drag in the group layer from the ArcCatalog Window.  This worked at 10 Sp 3.  Sorry for the previous confusion, I wrote ArcGIS, when I meant ArcScene. However, now I have learned the trick to do it.

Oh my my, LOL,

Now I am very confused...

Are you trying to say that you were able to group groups in ArcScene. If so, can you provided more details of how to accomplish this?

In ArcScene 10, open the Table of Contents and then create a Group Layer. Then you can drag the CAD layer in from the ArcCatalog Window in ArcScene to the New Group.  Thereby creating a 'grouped' group layer.  Since you indicated you were using CAD data, that is what I used in the example.  Once the Group Layer is created, you should be able to put the CAD data in it.
