Hi,

I am trying to calculate the 2D and 3D surface area usingfrom DEM
3D Analyst Tools-> Functional Surface-> Surface volume

input surface = DEM ( datum : WGS84, (both Horizontal and vertical) Units= meters
Reference Plane = ABOVE
Plane height = 0
Z Factor= 1

I observed, the 2D and 3D areas are not correct.

Then I created a 3D simulated surface
size: width = 241, height = 239, pixel size = 1 meter
First I have checked the 2D area before varifying the 3D area:

The 2D area is supposed to be =  57599 sq.m, but from Suface volume function 2D area = 57120 sq.km

Pl. help .

Hi venu_koppaka,

I could not really determine the issue without looking further at the data.  I do notice that you have a Plane Height of 0.  I would suggest to set the Plane Height to the minimum valid value of your surface.  It could possibly be that you have sinks or some erroneous values within the surface or boundary. Also, what projection are you using?

I think so you should change your Reference Plane as far as I know it should be below rather then above, so try to change it and see the result.

Team,

Do you have any idea how to make this 3D built-in function available in ArcGIS Explorer?

The question was posted at http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/92646-how-to-enable-3D-functionalities-also-working-in-free-desktop... but, no replied from ESRI.
