Just another re post from the Spatial Analyst forum, hopefully you guys can shed some light on this question. Is it possible to generate watersheds/basins that are numbered according to the strahler stream order scheme? So basically you would have all your order 1 basins with a single headwater stream, then your order 2 basins with two order 1 streams etc There must be a simple way to do this? I have been playing with a bunch of different solutions today with no luck. Would appreciate if anyone could share some light on this.

Hi everyone, this is a repost from the spatial analyst sub-forum. Is it possible to generate sub-basins according to strahler order? Using the watershed function with a stream order stream network results in generating a sub-basin for each stream segment rather than the merged/hierarchical arrangements of catchments you would expect e.g., order 3 basins contain order 2 basins, order 2 basins have order 1 etc The adjoint catchment doesn't achieve this. I was thinking if I could automatically delineate either stream confluences or pourpoints at the basinoutlet and extract the stream order value to those points it would be pretty simply to determine sub basins. Hec GeoHMS has a option to 'split at confluences' but you need to manually add the confluences which kinda defeats the point. I bet these is really simple and I'm just missing something really obvious. Thanks, Simon

Thanks mate. I was thinking if I could automatically delineate either stream confluences or pourpoints and extract the stream order values to those points it would be pretty simply to determine sub basins. Any ideas? alternative can anyway recommend another tool with similar functionality? I realise an alternative would be to manually define the stream lines I'm interested in by clipping the excess stream lines using the editing tools but that will be a tedious process.

Basically my problem is that one of my catchments refuses to have the stream line track the topography correctly. I am unsure why, the projection (WGS_1984_Equidistant_Conic) is the same as all the other catchments which have worked correctly. I'm using the flow path tracing tool included with Arc Hydro on Arc Gis 10 SP2on Window 7 64 bit. The flow direction grid was derived from 90m SRTM data. I'm confident this isn't an error associated with poor DEM quality or bad DEM preparation, the error is systematic (typically tracking to the left or right of where the stream should be and often following a 'bad' path) for the length of the stream line which makes me believe it is something to do with the projection...but the lack of the same similar error among the other catchments doesn't support this. Perhaps the error occurs when calculating the flow direction grid, but again the lack of similar errors for any other stream lines in other catchments seems strange. I've attached a screen grab of the error, as you can see the stream line is refusing to follow the topography...not sure what else to say apart from this. I've created 100s of digital stream networks, long profiles etc before and I've never had this happen before. Any ideas? new projection? change file format? resample down to 30m and try again...anything before I break my laptop :mad: Cheers, Simon
