Just noticed a significant performance difference yesterday when editing features in a feature data set, with topology over just features in the DB, when data was in data set it was much more degraded. Also found a vague piece online regarding different editing speeds when using database authentication vs windows authentication with the windows authentication SDE connection performing better. Too many different variations to test!

Just to wake up this thread...we are using 10.2.2, SQL2012 SP2 and SDE with DBO schema and direct connect. We have been fighting this issue for almost one year with no resolution. The SDE Geometry type seems to be a culprit and yes we heard SDEbinary was going away at 10.4. It seems worse when the data is within a feature data set. We are still testing different variations. I have recently set up a test environment with 10.3.1 and SQL2014. If anyone has more info, please drop a note. Thanks!

The way I understand ESRI software / data at the more current versions is that its a bit more "busy" on the network, especially in an edit session its constantly pinging the DB more than it did a couple versions ago. Based on what you are saying, network is probably the culprit but I am not a networking guy. I am sure there are concerns with the NIC both on the virtual host and on the VM itself...not sure how that's configured, the other issue might be the internal network switch and how that's set up / configured.

Yes. We are at SP2 CU3 so this fix has been addressed. The SP2 CU3 was actually a specific recommendation from ESRI for anyone that is interested.

When I read your reply on my phone my first thought was...does this guy work for ESRI? When I logged in on the PC to reply, I could see that was the case. What I gather from your reply is that you acknowledge there is an issue but are saying that at the end of the day, it is really Microsofts problem....

I have to ask. What version of ESRI Desktop is everyone using? It was our 10.2.2 Desktop connected to SDE with SQL2012 Geometry where we seen the major performance issue. However I spun up a new server and installed SQL 2014 and 10.3.1, loaded data into SDE with Geometry and its lightening fast! I think next week I will spin up a couple more test servers to check different combinations to see if I can isolate it. Aaron

Becky- ESRI was asking us some questions from a bug report I filed so we went back to test everything again. It turns out that the SDE - Geometry data that was originally slow is now working fine in an edit session. This data has persisted in the database and has been used by our web map for a little while now. So some theories are that it was related to windows updates, or SQL is somehow becoming more efficient overtime, or we had much more load on the data sets previously when tested. One thing that we did was, we created brand new data sets in the various configurations and then edited. The editing performance is horrible when the data is newly created. This is even after all of the normal data maintenance and optimization routines have been performed. So this is leading me to believe that SQL is automatically doing something to the data over time that improves its performance. I am not a SQL engineer so this is a bit out of my area of expertise. Its definitely something worth looking into. Any luck on your end?
