Here are a few ArcGIS StoryMaps enhancements to check out from the past month. Media actions – Easily switch from one media to another with a simple button click. Interchangeable media options in a sidecar slide include maps, images, videos, and embeds. See it in action in the Quizzed from above story! New cover styles – Even though it’s said to not “judge a book by its cover”, you can still capture your readers' attention with a snazzy, new cover style for your story. Move the text anywhere you like, resize it, and change the text background style in the full cover design. You can also choose to add your logo to the header, the cover, or both! Briefings enhancements – Print your briefings or save them as a PDF which is helpful for archiving. Copy a link to a slide to share specific parts of the briefing easily. You can now edit the slide title in the Table of Contents, swap content in a side-by-side slide, and change the text size on your slides. More pop-up options – Choose between two pop-up styles, anchored or docked to the side, to best show additional information on the map. With express maps, you can better fit or fill the image in the pop-up, add attribution, and include alternative text. Readers can now click to expand the express map pop-up image for better viewing. Additional media formats – Directly upload additional video and audio formats such as MOV and WAV. Long gone are the days of manual media conversion! Learn more in our release notes and don’t forget to check out the new StoryScape monthly magazine!

Hi Hannah, thanks for your patience with my response. Did you ever get the labels figured out? One possible solution could be to add pop-up text and additional info by double-clicking on the image in the Pop-up media section. Here you can add text that will be consistent for every pop-up or you can click on the plus sign to specify a field in the layer. Please let me know if I misunderstood your question.

Hi Katie, you make a great point that access includes many facets from physical to social to mental. I'm interested in hearing what other people have to say about how they measure and map access, vulnerability, and opportunity. Physical access is always a great place to start. I like to use walk and drive time around locations such as schools, libraries, hospitals, transit stops, opioid clinics, etc. Here's a story that walks through physical access to opioid clinics to identify underserved areas. It covers map color choice, walk vs. drive time, demographics, and opportunities to improve access. There's a policy maps site that has a lot of interesting maps that you can explore. A "policy map" is different from a regular map because it clearly shows where there are opportunities to intervene. Here's a collection of 14 maps I put together from the site to share with you as a way to spark some ideas. There's a map that shows the number of unsheltered homeless people in LA. That is the vulnerable population and the opportunity that you could map could be vacant government-owned buildings that could be converted into shelters, for example. Another map in this collection is a food desert map. It shows the vulnerable population in red which are people in poverty with low access to healthy food. They are outside of the reasonable walking distance of a supermarket. There's an opportunity zone map that could be overlayed with a population of interest to show where to open a new business to help boost the community. Another map in this collection shows adults with limited English ability. Maybe those areas are opportunities for signs in a specific language to fill out the Census. These are only ideas to get started and a quick splash into the vast ocean of maps available, stories to be told, and people to help rise up. Here's a helpful Learn ArcGIS path called Introduction to Policy Mapping. There are stories, videos, instructions, and blogs that share some helpful tips for policy mapping. Looking forward to hearing other suggestions!

Hi Marcel, glad it worked for you! You can now move images above the text in the new Map Viewer Beta with a simple drag and drop. Here's a blog where Paul Barker shares the new pop-up enhancements.

Hello, were you able to figure out what was causing the property length of null error? If not, please feel free to send me the arcade expression you are using and the layer if it is shared publicly. Thanks!

That's an interesting use case. For this next suggestion, you can disregard creating a field for attachID and field for number of attachments. Instead, in your url field, you can use this expression that evaluates the number of attachments per row. If there are no attachments, no url will be created, if there is only 1 attachment only 1 iframe will be created, and if there are 2 attachments then two iframes will be created (using AttachID+1). var iframe1 = "<iframe width='xxx' height='xxx' src= " var Part1 = "https://services1.arcgis.com/4yjifSiIG17X0gW4/arcgis/rest/services/TestAudioFile/FeatureServer/0/" var ObjectID = $feature.OBJECTID var Part2 = "/attachments/" var AttachID = First(Attachments($feature)).ID var iframe2 = " frameborder='0' allowfullscreen></iframe>" var iframeFinal = iframe1 + Part1 + ObjectID + Part2 + AttachID + iframe2 When(Count(Attachments($feature)) == 1, iframeFinal, Count(Attachments($feature)) == 2, iframeFinal + iframe1 + Part1 + ObjectID + Part2 + (AttachID+1) + iframe2, null) The trick is to figure out how to disable autoplay if there are two audio files in the pop-up. I opened the story in incognito mode and the audio files do not autoplay. However, when I view the story not in incognito mode, they autoplay. When there are two audio files in the pop-up it's not ideal that they play at the same time. Please let me know if you figure out a solution to this. Thanks!

Glad to hear that it worked for you. Are the other attachments images? If so, you could view the images in the pop-up as well. Check out the new map viewer beta if you haven't already. It automatically shows all image attachments in the pop-up (no arcade needed); you can also show all image attachments as lists.

Thanks for your comment. The new Map Viewer Beta will not be in Portal until we move out of beta. Until then, if you would like to add the image in a specific location (e.g., above your pop-up text), you can click the green Configure button and add an image through the Custom Attribute Display window.

Hi Trisha, thanks for your question. Have you tried the new Map Viewer Beta? The Map Viewer Beta has the option to reorder attachments, text, images, and attributes. If you have multiple attachments for one record, you can view them as a list. Since it's using 4x, you can even dock the pop-up.

Hi James. I don't know of any upcoming webinars, but we just had the User Conference in July where there were lots of recorded tech workshops. Until they become available, here are some videos from last year: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=arcade+expression+esri I also just released this story describing everything I shared during an Arcade workshop I gave a couple weeks ago at the conference. There are lots of additional links at the end of it: https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/2f65e766a5864a37a44a598d585f80b2

Here is a map of your test data showing how to do this. Click Modify Map in the top right, then open the layer's pop-up configuration to view the expression. If your object ID and attachment ID are the same, you can use the following code for your expression: var Part1 = "https://services4.arcgis.com/88rfrrytOLWa0xax/arcgis/rest/services/survey123_50d1bb44f2fe4e95a8bd5b01c1b91ae8_fieldworker/FeatureServer/0/" var ObjectID = $feature.ObjectId var Part2 = "/attachments/" var AttachID = $feature.ObjectId Part1 + ObjectID + Part2 + AttachID However, if the object ID and attachment ID are different, then I would add a countAttachments field (Part 1, Step 3) and an AttachID field (Part 1, Step 5) and use the Arcade expression format in Part 2.
