Does anyone know why I'm getting this error when trying to open current projects that previously crashed? They seemed to crash due to geoprocessing or saving the project.
What version of ArcGIS Pro are you using to open the projects?
Based on the error message it appears that the project was saved in a newer version, i.e. 2.1.2 and you are using an older version, i.e. 1.4.
Any more detail that you can provide on the project? When was the last time that you were able to open it with out an issue?
I have version 2.1.2
The projects that won't open (two of them now) were created using this version and I've never had another version installed on this computer. This is why I"m confused by the error message.
I've successfully opened, saved and closed the projects several times. However, prior to receiving this error message each project crashed during the exporting of data to a feature class. Both of these instances occurred in the last two days. I can still access layers from their respective geodatabases, however.
My suggestion would be to contact Esri Technical Support on this issue. It may be something that needs to be looked at in a lot more detail.
That's what I was thinking. I can't find the error referenced anywhere else. Thanks for your consideration!
Can you go into more detail about the feature classes that you were exporting when ArcPro crashed (e.g. file gdb, sde gdb - SQL Server, Oracle, other and the number of records in these feature classes)?
I am seeing the exact same error with ArcGIS Pro version 2.1.2. I didn't have a crash either. But my project file will not open. I hope there is a known fix because I am going to lose work otherwise.
I also have this problem that just started today and I have not changed versions. I have had numerous crashes on the project (when i could still open it) while simply editing the attribute table.
Has this error been resolved yet as I have just had the same issue? The ArcPro project crashed while exporting a layout and now I cannot open the project. This is incredibly frustrating as it is 4 weeks worth of work that can't be accessed. Is there any response from ESRI about this?
When forced to work with beta software like Pro, I always set a timer to remind me to back up everything every three hours.
I am having the same issue with ArcGIS Pro 2.2... Please Help!!!
The only way I found to resolve this issue was to use a server backup from the previous day as ESRI didn't respond to any requests for help. It turns out the original file had been corrupted by ArcPro during the export process. I'd recommend anyone using ArcPro to ensure that they have got a backup of the project copied regularly.
This happened to a project of mine. Pro didn't "crash" and create an error report, instead it suddenly threw a Windows "ArcGIS Pro has stopped working" error and now can't reopen the project. Updating to the newest patch (2.2.1) doesn't help.
Is there a way to salvage a dozen or so maps and layouts from a corrupted project?
Hi Veronica, was your issue solved by Esri Support? I have the exact same problem.
Hello George,
Can we get an update on the below error. As we too are getting the same Error.
I have created all my Projects in ArcGIS Pro 2.1.1....And still I am using the same Version of ArcGIS Pro 2.1.1...But I am having issue in Opening up the ArcGIS Pro Project as "Opening the Selected ArcGIS Project Failed. This Project was saved using a newer Version of ArcGIS".
Note:
We have not updated any new Version of ArcGIS Pro.
Really appreciate if anyone can Provide with a Solution.
What I discovered was the .aprx file was still there but the file size was 0! Apparently, a "save file" wrote a zero length file. In short, my project file was trashed. Since this happened to me AND this issue seems to still exist, I frequently backup all of my Pro files. Don't just blindly backup .... check file sizes first or you may overwrite a good .aprx with a zero length file.
Can you provide more specifics on the export process that you were performing when the corruption occurred? Details such as origin of data (file gdb, SDE, etc.), destination of data (file gdb, SDE, etc.) as well as type of data (point, line or polygon, other) and operating system you are working on Windows 7 or Windows 10?
I just started getting this message after running a Windows update. Has anyone ever found a solution?
If you remove the Windows update does it work correctly?
If so, I would contact Tech Support to let them know. They can then try to investigate the issue in more detail.
When was the Windows update applied? Was it working after the Windows update was applied for some time or did you notice this immediately after the Windows update was applied?
Has anyone had any success hearing back from ESRI? I've now lost 3 projects to the same error.
ESRI support got back to me basically saying "oh its because you have saved the project under a newer version than is on the computer". Makes me think they didn't even read the issue I was having....particularly since I stated that I had not run any updates on Pro, I don't use pro on any other machines, and no file locations/names had been change when the error start. I went ahead and updated to the most current version and still received the error..
Mostly, I want to know how to avoid triggering the error for my other projects, as some have several weeks of work behind them.
Hi Logan,
I'm sorry to hear you lost your work. From my research, I don't think the pattern has been uncovered yet on what causes this issue.
A few questions:
Hi Scott,
1. All my projects sit under the ArcGIS Project folder in my C drive. I didn't move or rename any.2. My .aprx is not empty, appears to have the appropriate size for the project's content.3. I have left projects overnight while the computer was hibernating at stages. However, in both instances the error occurred, I had saved the day before and shutdown ArcPro and the issue started the next day when I tried to relaunch. 4. AVG.
I've searched quite a bit too, and have not seen any response from ESRI on the issue. At this point, I'm not as worried about recovering work as I am about finding out how to avoid the error occurring again.
Thanks for that information. I've taken over the Support case, so look out for my email.
-Scott
If anyone sees the error, please contact Esri Technical Support at 888-377-4575, as we have an ongoing investigation into possible causes.
To understand the cause, here are the types of things we'd like to know:
We have the same issue too....We raised the case to support team earlier-
but there is no proper Solution that we received from Esri.
It would be great if you can help us in getting back the lost .aprx files.
We have lost several months of data that a team has put in.
This happened to me last in May and this is the response I received from ESRI after I provided the corrupt project. Is it worth opening up again? If so can you just reference my closed case number 02114618? Thanks
Hello Suzanne, This is Sydney from Esri Support Services writing in regards to case 02114618. I apologize for the delay in following up with you! Thank you so much for sending that project file. I did some pretty extensive testing with it and, unfortunately, I was also not able to open it in any version of ArcGIS Pro (including the most recent Pro 2.2 beta). We also have a method for inspecting the project files by attempting to unzip them with 7zip and check out the contents, but this was also unsuccessful as the project file wouldn't even unzip (a working project file would without issue). I suspect that this project has somehow become corrupted and you will need to rebuild it if you don't have a back up copy of it. Please let me know if you have any questions about this! If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to reach out and I'd be more than happy assist. As always, I can be reached by replying directly to this email or by calling Esri Support and referencing your case number. Then I received this:
Hello Suzanne, I looked over that error message we saw and it appears that at the end it's actually supposed to display a version number that the project was saved at (if it was actually saved with a newer version). Instead of displaying a version number like 2.0 or 2.2.1, all it shows is a single period. I did some research and it looks like other people had similar error messages when their project became corrupted. Unfortunately, it's a little hard to pin down why exactly a project gets corrupted as it can be caused for a number of reasons. It can happen sometimes if ArcGIS Pro crashes, isn't shut down properly, if there's some kind of bug that causes the project to corrupt using a certain workflow (this seems to be very rare but I've heard of it happening), but it can also be caused by something like antivirus software (again, this is very rare). Thankfully, project corruption is usually pretty rare and not that many people run into frequent issues with it. Usually what I suggest is making sure that ArcGIS Pro is up-to-date, that the software is closed properly (when possible), that your antivirus software has exceptions for ArcGIS Pro, and that you back up any major projects to a safe location in case you need to restore. If projects continue to get corrupted, I would suggest at that point to start with a full uninstall/reinstall of ArcGIS Pro to see if that resolves the issue. I would also suggest reaching out to Esri Support if you do run into any suspected project corruption issues as we can dig into the project some more to try and recover data from it (the 7zip method I mentioned in my last email works in a lot of cases though not always). Please let me know if you have any questions about this! I'm going to go ahead and close our case for now, but feel free to reach out if you have any other questions about this issue. As always, I can be reached by replying directly to this email or by calling Esri Support and referencing your case number. Thank you, Sydney Esri Support Services
Is "...that your antivirus software has exceptions for ArcGIS Pro." a requirement for running Pro? I'm not experiencing this problem, but whenever I see "disable a required security setting so the software will run", that is concerning. I know it's a trouble-shooting step as well, but it should never be the default environment required for any software to successfully work. In my experience, Symantec is pretty responsive when their product is identified as false-blocking another vendors application.
Janaki,
This investigation is to help uncover the cause. When a project gets to this state, so far, there is not a way to recover it, unfortunately. To understand the cause, here are the types of things we'd like to know:
If this information wasn't provided in the case, feel free to contact Esri Technical Support at 888-377-4575, as we would like to have it.
Scott
From what I just said to Janaki above:
When a project gets to this state, so far, there is not a way to recover it, unfortunately. To understand the cause, here are the types of things we'd like to know:
Thanks!
Yes, I read what you stated to Janaki. I just thought since my case was closed a while back and that the error is still occurring, that perhaps there were notes in my case or information that I already had provided that might help you with the problem. My mistake--Suzanne
Hi all,
I just had this happen to me with 2.3. I was using 2.3 the whole time, and that is the most updated Pro version. Very sad. I think Pro might have crashed while running the mosaic rasters function.
Has anybody found a workaround to at least rescuing the layouts in the file? This was a complicated layout I lost, and I am really hoping to save at least some of it!
Thanks for the help,
Jessie
Scott Harris I've also just experienced this issue in ArcGIS Pro v.2.2.4. I had just added a .lyr file and was repairing the data sources for the associated layers when it crashed. The project file size now shows as 0 Kb and I cannot open it from Windows Explorer or from ArcGIS Pro itself. No recent error reports show in C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\ESRI\ErrorReports. The antivirus being used is ESET Endpoint Antivirus. The most recent Windows update was on 01/03/2019, which was the one detailed here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4023057/update-to-windows-10-versions-1507-1511-1607-1703-1709-and-1803-for-up. Any updates on how to recover my work? Thanks,Rob
I am having the same issue. My project was saved in ArcGIS Pro 2.3.1 and is now failing to open.
Scott Harris Kory Kramer this may be totally irrelevant but....in trying to repro (chasing down the layer file cause), I notice that in Pro 2.3.1, when I create a layer file, the xml header is showing version 2.3.0....
Hi Rob,
I'm sorry for the delay - I think it would be best if you can submit a case with Esri Technical Support - Esri Support Contact Support . They would probably like copy of the layer file to test with.
I'm not aware of a way to recover affected projects.
Thanks Scott I have been in touch and provided them with the affected file.Rob
Running 2.3.2 and had this happen on May 3, 2019, so looks like it was not fixed in the update to 2.3.1. Even though I was very diligent about saving my work as you must do in ArcPro and spent the weekend trying to get to my work back, no luck. Unlike some others, my file size was not 0 but remained the proper size just would not open. I'll submit a ticket when I have time to do so.
Hello,
I've experienced this issue severeal times the last couple of months.
My solution is to restore an old version of the project , usually from the day before. Then I can open it without any problems. I've added a picture of how to do it (its in Swedish).
Hope that can help anyone.
/Erik
Hello Everyone,
I have the same error this morning.
This is the way I resolve the problem it might be luck. My project is saved in the desktop, I just copy the project from my desktop to the default drive where all ArcGIS Pro are saved automatically. when I opened the project again it opens without any problem.
good luck to everyone
Oh no... this has just happened to me. Have there been any new solutions to this problem?
This isn't the most ideal workaround, but it's the most effective I've seen being able to recover a project. Thank you!
This happened to me this morning. I was creating a mobile map package and the application froze. Then the whole computer froze. I couldn't even open the Task Manager. I had to force a shut down on my computer. Now that project file is corrupted. I can open other project files, but not the one I was working on. It says that the version I'm trying to open is higher than my current version. But I'm at the highest version now and was this morning when I was working in it. This is really frustrating as I lost work. The data is fine, but the layer setup/symbology/labels etc will all need to be setup again. Arg!!!
This also just happened to me. My computer froze when logging back in after the screen went to sleep, now my project is corrupt.
Hello everyone,
My colleague just experienced this issue and I'm wondering if there has been any revelations as to the cause or a recovery solution? He stated that he clicked 'Save' and then tried to X-out of Pro very shortly thereafter, which caused Pro and his computer to seize up, forcing a hard restart.
While the project is showing a file size, I am also unable to open it (receiving the same error as OP) via methods described above (copying to default Pro project location in Documents, opening from File Explorer, etc). We are both running 2.5.1, which is without question a newer version than that with which the project was created.
Thank you,Derek
The same exact thing just happened to me, and I'm running 2.5.2. This is extremely frustrating, ESRI! Any solution? My company runs regular backups every hour, so I was able to restore it to a previous version(an hour before). Regardless, this is very frustrating.
Same problem here. Really really with ESRI would weigh in and provide some info.
I am an infrequent user, mainly for basic cartography purposes. This issue had me pulling my hair out, especially because I'm certainly not as well-versed or as fast as the pros, and rebuilding entire sets of maps and layouts that took me days to make were simply not an option. I lost access to a .aprx file back in April, and have been living without access to quite a bit of work saved in that file.
After being tasked with a project that would involve rebuilding much of what was in the file, I spent some time trying to recover it. Happy to report I did so successfully. One important thing to note: My file, which was displaying the exact same reported error as the OP, did in fact still have a file size (632kb), unlike several others with this issue that had reported their file size at 0 after experiencing this error.
Here's what I did:
1. Copy the project file (not the entire folder) to a place on your local machine (e.g. desktop)
2. Rename the file by replacing the ".aprx" file extension with ".zip"
3. Try opening the file with file compression/extraction software such as WinZIP. In my case, I was unable to open the file. If in your case, you're able to open the file here, you probably have a different issue than I did.
4. Run the .zip file through a repair program. WinZIP has one built in. After the file is repaired, you should be able to see the contents as a list of folders and files, including "map", "layout", "007Index.ind", "documentInfo.xml", as well as several hex-coded .xml files.
5.***Make a back-up copy of your entire project folder before proceeding***
6. Rename the .zip file back to the original project name with the .aprx file extension
7. Overwrite the "broken" .aprx file with the repaired one
8. Cross your fingers and open the project file from windows explorer. In my case, I got a dialog stating "The project file was corrupt but has been repaired. You must restore references to external items such as folders, databases, and toolboxes manually." I restored connections to the geodatabases I had been originally using in the project and all maps and layouts appear to be intact.
I am experiencing this issue as well, attempted the workflow suggested by Goodrich, (thank you for sharing!) without any luck. The project was created in ArcGIS Pro 2.5.2 and all project work was done on that same computer, which doesn't have a newer version installed, never has.
Anyone else found a solution?
Thanks,
Steph
I got the same error today. I am running 2.6.1 and nothing has changed with the version of Pro I am using, the project was created with the same version. The project is saved in the same folder on my computer where I first created it, nothing about that has changed either. Almost 20 mosaic datasets that I created from satellite imagery that are needed to create TPKs are gone or not accessible. The project file shows 0kb.
Over 2 years of comments on this thread and multiple Pro updates.... you would think that there would have been a solution to this problem.
Edit: I now have 4 projects all created within the last month that have the same problem.
This just happened to me as well. I am using ArcGIS Pro 2.6.1. The program crashed after I updated a feature class in a local file geodatabase (true local, not synced to a cloud location). I immediately went to reopen the project and got an error that it was saved using a newer version. I did not downgrade my ArcGIS Pro before trying to open again.
The same exact thing happened to me today after applying software updates (the version of Pro is the same) and it's not the first time I've encountered this. Although this particular instance was related to installing an ArcPro update, these do not seem to be the sole source of the error.
This is an incredibly frustrating, ongoing, multi-year issue and I can't believe it hasn't been resolved. I've lost so much time and work as a result of this problem. I'm currently wasting a half hour trying roll back Pro software updates using a restore point on our server backup. I shouldn't be terrified of installing patches or updates because they could destroy an entire project.
Hello -
I just recently updated to 2.7.3 and had the same issue. I have a personal license I'm working in for a class and got the error about not being able to open because it was created in a newer version. I was able to right-click on the .aprx file and look at the version history. Click on one of the previous versions and restore. Worked nice and easy. I luckily save obsessively so didn't lose anything. I was able to export a layout, save it, close, and then re-open the project.
Hope this helps the next person who thinks they have to reinvent the wheel.
I just encountered this same issue on Pro 2.8. I recently updated and I have experienced this same error on every version I have updated to over the years. Will there ever be a solution?
Doesn't friggin look like it...
I submitted an ESRI case (#02853617) for this issue, which just occurred on a system that has ArcGIS Pro 2.7.2. Here is the response:
Thank you for your patience. Upon checking, this issue is a known bug that had been reported to the relevant team. I was fortunately able to recover the corrupted project using the following steps. This workflow works only on the original system where the project presumably became corrupt:
I don't know if this will work for anyone else, but wanted to post it just in case.
This error happened to me after a corruption with the flash drive the project was saved onto. Having a backup which was a few weeks behind the project helped only because I transferred the uncorrupted project file (.aprx) to the most recent folder that had the broken project file (but contained all of the relevant up to date files associated with the project). I replaced it with the older working project file and my project was ultimately unaffected luckily enough. However, ESRI need to get this fixed. Essentially the fix comes from replacing your broken .aprx file with an older version from the same project. That is the only way I could retrieve my work.
Step one: Remove broken project file from the workspace directory.
Step two: Insert project file from previous save.
This simple solution should allow you to open the project again from the most recent save.
This is happening to me in 2.9 with multiple projects. Unfortunately, none of the workarounds are working and the bug # mentioned above is no longer in their system...
Bug has been escalated with ESRI.
That's weird. Searching for that bug# gets me nothing. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing this and yes similar approach works out for me.
I didn't even try to open another working project first. I started the ArcGIS pro without template and then open the ppkx and it just worked directly.
My broken project is a ppkx (project package) generated using another machine. The reason I had to do this was that I accidently worked on a project using ArcGIS pro 3.0 and then I needed to make project file accessible from 2.x version, so I generated a ppkx using 3.0 and attempted to open the ppkx from another machine which only has 2.x. It failed when I tried to open it directly from file explorer but it worked if I opened it from inside ArcGIS Pro.
