It looks to me like the path to the AllUsers.msi might be the problem. Was Explorer downloaded directly onto your computer? If so, try providing the complete path to the local copy of the .MSI. It is downloaded to the user's %temp% directory by default. For example, on my computer, this command works for me: "msiexec /I C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Temp\ArcGISExplorer\2500\Setup\AllUsers.msi INSTALLDIR=C:\Esri /qb" Please let me know if you continue to have any issues with this. Regards, Lindsay

Michael, Your answers to these questions might help us determine the cause of the problem. 1) If you have access to a different machine, please try to download and install it on the second machine. Do you encounter the same problem? 2) On the machine where you are seeing the issue, try to save the download executable to a different location and then launch it. Same behavior? 3) If you restart the machine and try again, do you still see the problem? 4) Have you encountered any similar issues with other Esri downloads? Or with downloads from any other web sites? Regards, Lindsay

Hi Ron, Which build of Explorer Desktop did you install? Build 1750? Or the Beta release of build 2012? If you installed the Beta release of Explorer Desktop build 2012, you would have been prompted to indicate whether you wanted to install Explorer for A) all the users on your computer or B) only your user account. If you chose the second option and installed Explorer for your user only, the Explorer files would be located in your user account's location. For example, for my user - lind6207 - I find the Explorer executable at "C:\Users\lind6207\Explorer (x86)\bin\E3.exe." On Windows XP the location would be "C:\Documents and Settings\Users\lind6207\Explorer (x86)\bin\E3.exe". Regards, Lindsay

Terry, Despite my efforts, I have been unable to reproduce the error you're seeing on your 64-bit XP machine: ArcCatalog and ArcMap failing to launch once ArcGIS Explorer 1500 is installed. I tried to mimic your system configuration, but was still unable to recreate the problem. Here are some general "good practice" items to keep in mind when installing ArcGIS Explorer: 1) Stop all of your ArcGIS Services (eg. ArcGIS Server Object Manager) before installing Explorer. 2) Allow all installations to complete without interruption. The Explorer installation may appear frozen at times, but it's important to allow it to complete. 3) Review ArcGIS Explorer Knowledge Base Articles here: http://resources.arcgis.com/content/kbase?p=116&fa=tree If the problem persists, I recommend contacting ESRI Support. Thank you very much for the information you've provided and your feedback. All the best, Lindsay

Hi Terry, That's interesting. It shouldn't be a 64-bit issue; we did test Explorer with other ArcGIS products installed on 64-bit machines before releasing 1500. However, there are so many product/OS combinations, we certainly weren't able to cover them all. I'm working on a 64-bit XP OS at the moment to see if I can experience the same problems you've reported. Thanks again for your feedback. Regards, Lindsay

Graeme, I'm sorry to hear you and your colleague are experiencing problems with ArcGIS Explorer 1500 and ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1. The first thing I recommend is running a Repair on the Desktop setup through "Add/Remove Programs" on the Windows control panel if ArcCatalog 9.3.1 doesn't launch after installing Explorer. In the case where switching between 3D and 2D is the problem in Explorer, perhaps updating your graphics card driver will help. We did not experience any problems when we tested ArcGIS Explorer 1500 and ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1 before releasing 1500, but if you could provide us with information regarding the system(s) on which you've encountered issues, we might be able to determine their cause. Your answers to these questions would be particularly helpful: Do you have any other ESRI products installed other than ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1 (sp?) and ArcGIS Explorer 1500? Do you have any ESRI or non-ESRI extensions installed? If you've encountered issues on some systems but not others, what can you tell us about the differences between these systems? Thank you for your feedback. Regards, Lindsay

Don, Knowing more about your system will help us determine the cause the problem you are seeing, and help us try to correct it for future releases. Information regarding what extensions (ESRI or non-ESRI) you have installed would be particularly helpful. Thank you, Lindsay

ArcGIS Explorer (both 900 and 1200 versions) should be able to run on the same machine with ArcGIS Desktop. We are aware of one issue caused by the removal of ArcGIS Explorer 900. A KB article has been written with more details: http://resources.arcgis.com/content/kbase?fa=articleShow&d=37707 Running a Repair on the ArcGIS Desktop setup should resolve most problems (can be done through "Add/Remove Programs" or "Programs and Feautres", depending on OS). Please note however, if ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 or 9.3 is installed or repaired after ArcGIS Explorer is installed, it will also be necessary to repair the Explorer setup. Once this repair is complete, both products should function correctly. If problems continue after the Repairs are performed, please provide details regarding your system environment (e.g. what OS, what ESRI products are installed, and are there any ESRI and/or non-ESRI extensions installed?), so we can try to determine the cause of the problem. Thank you, Lindsay
