Hey Thomas, Each of the imagery layers have specific purposes and uses and there are blogs that detail some of the varied use cases. Choosing the Perfect Imagery How can tiled imagery layers make your organization more successful For your description, I would encourage you to consider an alternative if you are looking to provide a single imagery layer that shows time periods. You could use a multidimensional tiled imagery layer to accomplish the same thing. The tiled layer is a single layer that can offer what you are looking for. Here is one that I have created that shows Landsat data over the years. Lake Mead Time Series tiled imagery layer You can use the multidimensional settings in Map Viewer or in ArcGIS Pro to display different time periods. I have included instructions on how to create the imagery layer with the mosaic dataset. Assess wildfire damage in ArcGIS Online This should work for your purposes. You can : Share the imagery layer publicly Display one layer at a time Show the time periods Good luck and please let me know if you have any follow up questions.

Hi Duncan, All of the layers in ArcGIS Online have upsides and downsides and can be used for very different purposes. For the Wayback imagery, the tile layers perform exceptionally well and look amazing. For the purposes of the Wayback machine, they perform amazingly. The app visualizes what once was so tile layers work exceptionally. For more analytical purposes, imagery layers provide pixel values and source metadata. So the wayback machine has performed its purpose as the start of your analysis and led you to other research options. I hope your research works out and if you have any other questions feel free to message me on the Esri Community app.

Hi Duncan, For that tile layer, if you are searching for the collection date of that imagery, then you can trust that the 2019 tile layer contains imagery from 2019 and so on for each of the tile layers. However, if you are researching on the acquisition date for a particular dataset within that dataset, other than the listed year in the set you will not find it with those fields. If you want specific dates, I would consider the Living Atlas Sentinel 2a Level 2 or Landsat imagery layers for specific dates. Both have 'Acquisition date' fields that you can trust.

Hey Duncan, I went in and was looking into your issue and there are a few things to discuss. So first since you are using the World Imagery layer you need to understand that while it shows imagery it is a tile layer. So what you are reviewing is the metadata of the tiles, not the source imagery. So when a tile layer is created, 'tiles' based on the source imagery are created. So the metadata you are looking at refers to the creation of the tiles rather than the source imagery. That metadata is updated each time the tiles for that tile layer are updated which happens periodically. If you are interested in pixel values and the source imagery, then be sure to select an Imagery layer like this one - US NAIP Imagery layer. Once an imagery layer like that is added to ArcGIS Pro, you can use the Raster Item Explorer. Hope this helps. Jeff

In the 'holes' can you identify the pixel values? It looks as if your water pixels are being confused for NoData. Depending on the pixel values the stretch appears to be removing them during the process based on the histogram. Does the effect happen with any other stretch?

I understand why Dynamic layer as an image collection is the choice, just wanted to offer the other if you plan on sharing it outside your organization, which you can't with a dynamic and if you are simply showing different dates, then the multidimensional tiled imagery layer fits the bill. With the Mulitdimensional slider and the same in Pro, you can access all the dates or even animate them. Can you elaborate which types of fields are dropped? because for my tests I can still see the dates and other text fields that are added. What types of fields are you adding that are being dropped?

That seems as if there is a problem with the upload process. If you want to upload the time enabled imagery layer, perhaps look at this workflow to use a tiled imagery layer. Create a multidimensional mosaic dataset and host an multidimensional imagery layer Here is an example of the output from a different area. Lake Mead Time Series Tiled Imagery Layer You can then manipulate the imagery layer or animate it with the Multidimensional slider.

Ok so the field will not appeared or it is not time enabled. You should enable the time enable the mosaic dataset. Subsequent addition to the imagery layer should catch these updates. I would recommend staying with Image Server if possible as this is a perfect Image Server workflow. Imagery layers in ArcGIS Online for dynamic image collections can be updated via the Python API as a find and replace. I will give this a try and see if I can get it working. The other option would be to create a multidimensional tiled imagery layer, but then you would have to currently replace the tiled imagery layer. So you would create a mosaic dataset to upload the new images and then recreate the imagery layer once the new one is added.

Hey Jourdain, Thanks for the continued interest. We agree that this is important functionality and it is something that is still being discussed. I would encourage you to formally submit it on the Esri Ideas page. That way it can be tracked formally. Thanks for the interest and hopefully we will see the ability to update tiled imagery layers in the near future.

Hi Vincenzo, I would consider a different input layer for your processing as the World Imagery basemap is probably not the best choice in this situation. Depending on where you are looking to analyze, I would strongly consider downloading the images and using them as the input. Here is a blog that shows some of the sources you can use to download your own imagery. Imagery sources to power your analysis

Sounds like ArcGIS Image is a good fit for you. You don't need to publish the MDs, you can simply add them through the web interface in ArcGIS Online if it is easier. Let me know how it works out for you. Here is a collection of blogs that I have written that may help out some in the process. https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/author/jswain/
