Hello, I have used both of these interfaces when collecting simple geographic info, with photo attachments using #android os and #iPhone devices. I have found some shortcomings when using the app. Specifically, when not in a data coverage area the uploads of the photos fail and the app does not cache the photos in the background by default. Whereas the #Survey123 seems to do this just fine. I understand the apps can be configured and customized, but my organization has very little in terms of resources to do this, so I was wondering if I am missing something simple or not? I want to be able to capture locations with photos and notes. If I have to go the route of gaining the rest of my team access to #survey123 existing features (which would cost me more money, I believe???), then I will do this instead of fixing the app. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I do like that idea as well! I was thinking something similar for the posted locations too (even though those will not be public facing) just to say something like, "we will support/back/testify for any landowner claims of trespassing and vandalism of their property." Thanks jhead@lakeworth

edwa8511 - Your personal experience is very much appreciated here. If I were going it alone on this project I would not have an issue with making the data open source. A long time ago, in order to gain access to a vast amount of data, I signed NDA (probably not legally binding at this point, but I have a lot of respect for the source). The NDA made it very clear that certain data sets were to stay off public domain/being published. I totally agree with your sentiment here and think, in an ideal world, knowledge is power. In this circumstance, knowledge offers party-goers and otherwise irresponsible individuals the access to locations otherwise unknown to the general public. Some other notable websites have proven this theory by publishing many posted and public location, only to have people further trash the locations and hurt our efforts in land-owner relations... Basically, it is the "waterfall communities fault" for what is happening to these beautiful locations... OK... A little off track. But I hope this offers some insight.

KGerrow-esristaff - Thank you for the information. If I am understanding correctly, the tile layer would essentially be a set of "pictures" of my data, but would not allow clicking points to show the pop-up data box? I want to be sure I can offer data about each point, but I still really like your option! Thank you so much for the suggestion. I will take it to my team to see if this will work for us. Best regards, ES

Hello xander_bakker, You have confirmed my fears that, like anything on the internet, the data is not protected once it is shared publicly. This is one of the reasons I enjoyed Fusion Tables so much... I will have to research a bit more and possibly even team up with other industry professionals to be sure the work is properly attributed moving forward so that even if the data were mined there would be multiple locations using the citation.

Thank you, Joe! The premise is that I will create a "public" facing map using a separate feature layer so the posted locations do not get accidentally shared. Once this map is published to the public I fear that the data can be easily mined and the citation stripped. How do I protect it so that my company and the persons involved with the survey are kept properly cited and the data not "stolen"? I currently have a map published to www.DigTheFalls.com and wish to use ArcGIS embedded in the future. On the flip side, the complete survey would only be made fully available to those of which would use it for research and other activities.

Hello, I have a fairly non-unique subject that I am accumulating location information about (New York State Waterfalls). I know that a good part of the content is unique to my "survey". Other content I researched and included in the citation, even though we personally fact checked the information after collecting the initial point information (waterfall name and coordinance). My question would be: Once I decide to make this survey public, how do I protect the data from being mined by a "competitor" for their gain? I do not plan on financially gaining from this project, but I have a team of people that have placed decades of work into this survey and I wish to keep them cited for their work. I am aware of the meta that can be added, but this only serves as a warning... I would like it to be known if anyone has used the data from my specific survey. A second question would be: How do I share the content, but restrict access to the "private" locations (posted or inaccessible)? I would love to build a layer only seen by my team and Accademia.

That is some great advice g.doerffelmysynergis-esridist - I am going to take that into consideration when publishing the data. I believe, with that thought in mind, I will be able to publish as few as three layers (but the execution will ultimately show if this is true). Thank you, sir!

Good Morning Günter and thank you for the feedback. Right now I plan to load them by CSV and them transition them into a FeatureClass, just as you explained. You have done a lot to set my mind at ease as far as the lag in loading. I have tried to load them all and had mixed results (about 10% of the points never uploaded so I loaded them separately and merged the two tables. Ultimately my goal is as Ted suggests; being able to look at local or nearby locations and find parking/trail heads easily for my users. I do have a lot of that data collected already, but it sounds like I will want that all on separate layers to make the interface easier for the users. My goal is to load the right way the first time, since this data has been collected over a 15 year period, with lots of rework involved due to not following best practices in the past. I hope this answers your questions and might help you offer up some other opportunities for my data.

Hello, Ted - Thank you for the in depth reply! I think your work around is ingenious, although I want to try to work within the constraints of the ArcGIS website and app environment. Basically, I want to start out with as little custom coding as possible and then work from the (Keep It Simple, so to speak). My main concern is speed and also the "cleanliness" of the data being presented. I have waterfall locations as my point data. Using the streetlight comparison, looking at the state of New York (waterfalls) is like looking at a map of New York City (streetlights). Is it suggested to place data on different layers in order to prevent over 1000 points per layer or am I looking at this all wrong?

Hello - I have asked this question before with no replies, but would greatly appreciate any advice. I have a CSV of over 2,500 points, with a couple dozen columns of information pertaining to each point. I am aware that I can add over 1,000 points to any map, but will lose performance in certain situations and uses. Can anyone offer advice as to best practices for managing this type of content? I am able to break the data into regions within the state, but don't want to break it up if it is not necessary. My goal is to offer an online map of the data and a mobile app. Thanks in advance!!

I had asked this in another thread, with no replies. I thought I might add it here as well: I am relatively new to the ArcGIS platform. I have been using Google Fusion Tables to display a lot of my data. I have seen the drawbacks of having too many points displayed on one map, so I need clarification of the best practices when handling a list of points that number at 3,000+. All of my locations are of a similar geographic feature (waterfall), in the same state. The state is broken up into tourism regions, which I could use for filtering purposes, but at least two of these regions would have 1,000 or more locations inside of it. They are further broken into counties. There will be text, at least one photo and eventually at least one GPX (or comparable trail mapping file) file. My question centers around the best way to create maps ( the feature layers) that will cause the least amount of lag while loading, but also not hinder the built in functionality or require the need for multiple maps. Is this a matter of breaking the data into separate layers by region, county or zip code? I have wasted countless hours in the past and want to be sure when I set this up it is done right from the start. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! An example of my present map is: Search Waterfall Locations In New York | Dig The Falls
