Merge Selected Features Greyed-Out/Unavailable

On the edit toolbar, the merge tool is unavailable even when set to "On."  I have two features from the same feature class selected (I am able to edit the attributes, add, delete, update geometry) but I am unable to merge them into one feature.

Has anyone else run into this?  Any ideas?

It seems that this is works for polygon features, can you confirm what kind of data you're working with? Are they polyline features?

Yes, they are polyline features.  The merge works for polygons.

Is this a limitation of the API in general?

Limitations/Quirks:
-Polygons are not simplified when editing existing features.
-Merging is only supported for polygons.
-CompositeSymbol works with the Editor (as of version 2.4) but no swatches are shown as the CompositeSymbol does not support swatches.
