Automate overwrite web layer, feature class

I'm trying to automate an update process for one of my hosted features in portal. So far I have:

1. Solved the automatic download and adjustment of the file in question. (using powershell/task scheduler)

2. exportet the python code that runs the "Geocode Addresses" tool on my file, saves it in a file gdb.

3. manually published the feature class with the "overwrite web layer" function.

My challange is to automate step 3, and connect it to step 2.

Please keep in mind that I'm completely new to scripting/python.

I'm currently using ArcGIS Pro 2.1.0, and have admin rights on the portal.

I have looked at thise sites, and think they describe partly how to solve my issue, I'm just not able to pick out the relevant parts and build a script that works for my particular problem..

Hi AdminAccount2, thanks so much for sharing this script, i was able to use it solve an issue i had where the project contains multiple layers that require updating. Do you know how this script could be modified so that the layer scheme's could be updated as well, or is this not supported using the overwrite function?

I fixed up this script so it can be run autonomously from a CI tool. The script will connect to a Pro Project and look for a map that contains the feature layers to be overwritten. All the feature layers contained in this map and their service definitions must have already been published initially and hosted on AGOL.

The script disables sync and unregisters replicas before overwriting the service definition file and existing feature service. The feature layers in the map may be grouped or ungrouped. Grouped layers will be published as a single feature service, same as the ungrouped layers. All service properties (sync, sharing, editing etc.) will remain the same as they originally were. The layer names in the Pro map must match the published feature layer names, so make sure the map is setup correctly in Pro.

A single service can have multiple layers, so this would not work in that scenario.

True - but for the sake of reaping the benefits of using an automated publishing process like this, I'd make sure each layer in the map was published separately as a single service. This would be a special map only used for this purpose. The script will be run daily from a CI tool like Jenkins, so it needs to run completely autonomously on multiple layers.

Ideally this script would loop through a list of all the layers the map and republish each one of them.

A single service can have multiple layers, so this would not work in that scenario. Also, different services may require different variables (i.e. sharing). An option could be to create a config file of the variables that the code loops through and executes the overwrite.

Would be great if someone could modify this script to include disable sync and unregister replicas before publishing takes place. I actually have attached a script that does this (attached) ... but not sure how/where to add it into the existing code example for automated publishing.

Just be aware this method or most of the other methods don't work if you've got outstanding replicas or sync enabled.

The FeatureSharingDraft class allows you to create a service definition draft file (.sddraft) for a web feature layer that copies all data to either ArcGIS Enterprise or ArcGIS Online.

I needed to overwrite an existing feature service in AGOL. I adapted one of the code examples from the help page. I'm referencing a map layer within a Pro project from a stand-alone script.

@ToddMcNeilI would recommend using ArcGIS Pro's Delete Rows and Append tools, rather than an overwrite. These tools will work the same on a feature service just as if it were a feature class.

@JakeSkinner I use Pro to create the hosted feature service with the Export Data checked on. When I update the FS using your code with the allow_exporting=True added. It is removing the Download capability for the hosted feature service from my Portal Sites page.

Code was working great but all of a sudden once it creates the service definition it looks nothing like the way I have it in the aprx. Its like its defaulting to another one some where any ideas?

Sure, I could do that. But if I can right click and overwrite the hosted feature service in Pro, shouldn’t I be able to do the same from Python?

is there a way to have the hosted feature service reflect the changes in the sde data automatically? I’d rather simplify this process.

@LeviCecilinstead of overwriting the hosted feature service, you could run ArcGIS Pro's Delete Rows and Append tools on the feature service. These two tools could be executed in a model, or you could export the model to a python script and run the script as a scheduled task.

I'm also having trouble overwriting a hosted feature service on our Enterprise Portal. I have an sde dataset that is updated weekly that we're using for a Field Maps app. I need to automate the update of the hosted feature layer. So, I'm a bit confused about why the script here involves updating the service definition and using an ArcPro project map, but the script here does not. Is there guidance concerning when to use one method vs. the other?

I tried the linked sample script as a method to overwrite a hosted feature layer I published from ArcPro with a feature class in a file geodatabase. I don't get any errors, but it also doesn't update and I can't find any information on this. I would prefer not to have to maintain an ArcPro Project / map because I'm not the person who'll actually be running the script. Any suggestions appreciated.

I found this post that refers to the problem you're running into.

Could you try to change:

sdItem = gis.content.search("{} AND owner:{}".format(sd_fs_name, user), item_type="Service Definition")[0]

To this:

sdItem = gis.content.search(query="title:"+ sd_fs_name + " AND owner: " + user, item_type="Service Definition")[0]

From what I read the original search string is causing the turn into a boolean, which does not restrict the title to an exact match. This may not be returning the desired item that needs to be overwritten.

I have been running the original script provided by Jake Skinner and it has been working. But, with upgrades to desktop and ArcGIS Pro, I have run into some snags and I'm revisiting this script for automated updates to two of my feature services. Below is the script that I am running and the error that I am receiving. I have tried completely deleting the old feature service and service definition file from AGOL and starting over and I still get the error. If anybody would be so kind to assist, I would greatly appreciate it!

Any idea how to specify a time zone when overwriting the layer? I was able to get this code to work but my data is showing up one day behind because it's not converting from UTC to local time.

I haven’t explored those functions, my suggestion would be to have a look at the documentation for the arcgis api, there is possibly something in there. I followed the example here https://developers.arcgis.com/python/guide/updating-feature-layer-properties/

I was happy to find this thread! I also found using the suggestion of gis.content.get(sd_id) allowed me to automate overwriting my feature service.

My project is for a countywide tax parcels layer. Whenever I update the layer (ovewrite feature service) I also like to "Optimize Layer Drawing" and "Rebuild Indexes."

Are there some Python API commands to automate these tasks as well?

Thank you to those who have contributed to this discussion, I have now found a solution that allows us to successfully update our hosted feature layers, I found a couple of fish hooks with searcing for the feature layer so have modified the script to use the item id, here is the version we are running. I am very new to scripting so my future modification would be to include a loop that runs through all projects within a folder and a list of item id's. But that is for the future.

I had this issue and found that I actually had 3 maps saved in my projects and the top map was empty, removed the other two and it worked perfectly

I'm trying to run this script, it works fine from my laptop outwith our corp network but when I try to run the python script either within ArcPro or as a standalone python script it fails as it cannot connect to the port url to login. It times out and throws a few errors which I can only presume is due to our proxy. I can login into the port fine via ArcPro and overwrite the layer via ArcPro tools I just can't run the python script.

urllib.error.URLError: <urlopen error [WinError 10060] A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond>

I think that may be the issue. I believe the SD file will replace the spaces with underscores. Take a look at your portal and locate the SD file, what is the name? The error is indicating your search is not finding any results.

Hi Amanda,

I not sure whether you got your issue solved or not. But if not yet, then I think the error suggests that you should add a layer on a map. for example you can use map.addLayer (layer, "TOP") , and then try creating service definition file.

Hello, I am also receiving the same error. I am not having any issues with Pro however, and can manually update from there just fine. I am currently working out of jupyter notebook if that helps at all.

Never mind. User error. It would help to have the feature layer already hosted in the Portal. Once the feature layer exists in Portal, the script overwrote the hosted feature layer successfully.

I am using Windows Authentication for the Portal. And it gives the "IndexError: list index out of range" error message when it reaches the line sdItem = gis.content.search("{} AND owner:{}".format(sd_fs_name, user), item_type="Service Definition")[0].

Here are my 4 lines for connecting to the Portal in the beginning of the script.

figured it out, the problem was with:

Looks like it's erroring when trying to create the SD file. Double-check to make sure you have the correct path to your aprx file.
