How do I set the IDE for Python in ArcGIS Pro?

Hi, I'm having difficulty setting the IDE used opened by ArcGIS pro when I right-click a script and select Edit. I have tried to enter the filepath to pyscripter.exe in under geoprocessing options, but even so only the standard text editor opens. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Sorry to hear that you hit this. In a variety of circumstances, there was a bug which prevented the user-selected IDE from being launched, or IDLE which is shipped with Pro. I believe you're enrolled in the EAP program, and the latest Pro 2.3 candidates should have resolved these issues. If you configure an IDE, it should be used everywhere, including when editing script validation code. If you don't have an IDE selected, it should default to IDLE for all Python scripts now.

The other suggestions in this thread are also good, and if you have further issues with using an IDE of your choice (or the default IDLE), please let me know.

I like PyScripter and I have the need for both x32 and x64 Python. So far this is working.

Starting from a fresh install (I have had bad luck with updates) I solved this problem by first installing and Configuring Arcis Pro 2.2.x. I then installed and configured PyScripter 3.4.1 x64 to use the Anaconda Virtual environment IE PyScripter x64 launches using the Python Install in C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Pro\bin\Python\envs\arcgispro-py3.

Then I installed ArcGIS Desktop 10.6. Finally I installed PyScripter 3.4.1 x32 which detected Python 27 which was installed with ArcGIS Desktop.

Joe, yes, I can now get PyScripter to open when I click Edit script. It may be the recent update for ArcPro, or it may be that a few weeks ago I installed both Pyscripter 2.7 and Pyscripter 3.6 - although I did not touch the pathing since my last attempt, the version of Pyscripter was set to 2.7 when I first opened it through editing an ArcPro script.

I wouldn't characterize it as "reluctant"...We JUST got the install script to the point where Pro auto deployment will complete an install without requiring a call to TS. Once we start adding "Power Python" to the mix, where most folks, the most they'll ever do in Py is change a variable or use it to clip 100 rasters with the same polygon, IMHO, for software that is 4 years old ....paraphrasing another disgruntled Pro customer "I didn't break it so I'm not going to fix it". Corporate GIS deployments are pretty locked down, with months of "approvals" just about what folder it's going to get installed in. They do not want to hear that someone has to administratively log into 3000 computers and further tweak python to get it to work.

The 2.2.1 update didn't address this and for those reluctant to follow my process, they are kindof stuck with lame edit capabilities, short of doing all of the dev and testing totally outside of Pro

The file you put into the Editor text box should be “C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Pro\bin\Python\envs\arcgispro-py3\Lib\idlelib\idle.py” like with ArcMap before it (see below).

But doing something similar and using "C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Pro\bin\Python\envs\arcgispro-py3\Lib\idlelib\idle.py" should work but it didn't for me.

An odd workaround is to use "C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Pro\bin\Python\envs\arcgispro-py3\Lib\idlelib\idle.bat" like so:

You'll open the script in IDLE... but also in Notepad...

Have you tried going directly to the location of the script on your network in Windows Explorer and right-clicking on the script file? When I do this on my network I get the following options after a default installation of Pro:

I choose Edit with IDLE and I'm using IDLE to modify and run my script and not NotePad.

Dan, the problem is, I can't really customize my py or pro environment, we're moving toward centralized installs/images, even on my machine, so Spyder is not in the cards...scripts are in a toolbox....

Michael, not sure what searching is....I have a toolbox embedded in a Pro template with the scripts "Imported". When I open a new project using the template, and attempt to "edit" a script, all I get is notepad (most of the time) regardless of what py editor I list in options.

Are you searching within a toolbox that you created for the python scripts in your post?

try Spyder, I have been using it for a long time.

Also... put those scripts in a toolbox, I can't tell from the movie whether you are using catalog view or whatever.

You can even set up a default toolbox if needed, or use the one that is created in your project. When you right-click on one of those scripts, Spyder does open to edit it.

I have the same problem. No matter what I set the editor to be (even tried Word, Excel, Notepad++), the editor "most of the time" defaults to notepad. In the times that it doesn't, and defaults to idle, edits made and saved with idle replace the entire script with the path of the script.

I am not sure why it isn't working. I have successfully changed it to the bundled Idle that comes with ArcGIS Pro as well as PyCharm. If I get a chance to install PyScripter, I will give it a shot and see if it works.

You might want to consider Spyder since it is part of the Anaconda distribution that surrounds PRO. There is also Jupyter notebook and IPython console etc
