But a slightly different spin. When you hover over a feature class in a Catalog View you see this:
Modified: is blank. Can this be turned on or am I barking up the same tree as the thread above. It's only been two years....

Probably the same tree @JoeBorgione If it could be fetched to display in the Catalog view it could probably be displayed there as well. I'll get in touch again with the dev team to see where we are on this.
