ABSTRACT Science, Society and Snow Leopards: The high range Himalayan ecosystem in Pakistan is of crucial importance for the biodiversity and ecosystems of global significance including the globally endangered snow leopard range that extends across twelve range countries. The PSLEP project is a Landscape Based Conservation Project. The project will be implemented in three Model Landscapes (Karakoram-Pamir, Hindu Kush and Himalaya). The overall aim of the project is to promote a landscape approach for the survival of snow leopard and its prey species by reducing threats and applying sustainable land and forest management in critical habitats in Northern Pakistan. This will be achieved through the four interrelated components of the project, these are: 1) Landscape level approach for snow leopard conservation; 2) Protected Area expansion and strengthening; 3) Preceptory conservation in snow leopard model landscapes through sustainable community development; and 4) Support for international cooperation and conservation and management actions. The project will help conserve 1,500,000 hectares of Snow Leopard Landscape and improve socioeconomic condition of 4,000 households.
