Conservation GIS Tracks and Themes Master Classification
Reference Project Classification Jun 12 2020
This document is a classification of a decade+ of Conservation GIS papers, maps, speakers and events active in the global Conservation GIS community including the Annual SCGIS International Conference. I have been involved in designing the agenda for this and similar conferences since around 1992, and archiving & recording presentations since around 2013. As a taxonomic effort it was interesting to look back on all of the session designs that were used for papers in the past and look for common patterns and groupings over the years. As a data access effort it seemed worthwhile to create a classification for the common patterns and topics and look for additional levels at which these talks, events & people might fall into natural groupings. Such a typology could then be used to search and access these resources in more useful ways. This classification is the basis for the new “Conservation GIS Reference Project”
UPDATE Jun 12, 2020 more cleaning up format, begin adding ANY newsworthy posting, from people to events to webinars to announcements, that would be of lasting interest to these specific communities of GIS users, both conservationists & activists. Begin to describe the reference project content as talks, events & people. Remove the word "master" from title.
UPDATE Apr 25 2020 Change layout for more logical groupings, move institutions & societies to end because it's a more structural rather than thematic grouping, while still falling under the "Action" category. add more tech tags
UPDATE Jan 15th 2020 Searches on dual word terms were too inconsistent as the second word often matched every record, so all dual word tags are now combined as one word no spaces and these changed tags are highlighted in yellow to aid tag updating. Significant revisions to the "Institutional" category of terms to work better in creating lists and pages for every annual conference, all scholars, all events in a country, etc. Sorry but this section is still very messy and will be cleaned up and refined by next update.
At the top level, .Conservation GIS talks, events & people seem to fall into 3 general types based on the nature of the Conservation GIS Activities & Projects being conducted: Action based, Tech based, and Practice based.
Action-based are talks, events or people whose main focus is on human outcomes, advocacy and social change, including working with human communities, social justice & equity, planning and collaboration, traditional ecological knowledge, and public participation.
Tech based are talks, events or people whose main focus is the technology used, or methods for working with specific technologies like Drones, Mobile and Remote Sensing. Most of these tech uses revolve around data collection, field methods, and working with imagery data.
Practice-based are talks, events or people whose main focus is the type of conservation practice, which tend to be either geographically defined such as landscapes, habitats, ocean, parks, watersheds & forests, or biologically defined such as species, vegetation, species distribution, endangered species, or threat defined such as Climate Change, Pollution, Habitat loss, water quality, environmental quality, drought, invasives.
Within each of these 3 general types, there are sub-groups based on other factors which are still being explored as new material is researched and added.
( NOTE: Reference Project Search terms must start with an “x” so as to create a unique special search function limited to this specific design of Reference search concepts. Without it search results would include any mention of a search word even if it wasn't relevant to the core work of the talk, event or person)
Setting up a discrete search classification for the purposes of capturing and normalizing talks, events and people across many years is meant to support a different task than traditional open searches using GEONET “TAGS”. The reference project uses a different approach in order to keep TAGS free for GEONET users to apply their own terms to for other more traditional GEONET searches.)
At the end of each list section are lists of conference agenda sessions and talks that were used as initial source records to help get the classification started and to show examples of the kinds of sessions regarded as belonging to each grouping.
Topics & Terms List
ACTION-BASED are talks, events & people whose main focus is on human behavior, social change, communities, decisions & outcomes, such as advocacy, social justice, social & political structures, planning and collaboration, traditional ecological knowledge, and public participation.

Hi!
I see that for this year, under “Species-based conservation sessions”, there will be a workshop on “Species dist modelling 2018”. Do we have to sign up to take part of it, or is it open to anyone who wants to attend without number restrictions?
Thanks!
Hi, Workshops within the SCGIS conference are open to anyone who wants to attend, but in case it's standing room only, arrive earlier to be sure of finding a seat.
Thanks for the information Charles!
