Michael - I wrote a book and write a blog on the importance of spatial data, and one of my posts might be helpful to you - Key statements about the importance of spatial data | Spatial Reserves   I also have filmed a series of elevator speeches - in actual elevators, about the importance of GIS - geographyuberalles - YouTube

I realize that it is a challenge though to help people see that the investment in GIS will pay off - but it will - and there are other resources we can suggest if the above are not useful.  -Joseph K

I always use a quote I learned a long time ago (don't know where), "A photo say, A picture is worth a thousand words.  A GIS is worth a thousand pictures."  The main advantage of an online map is that it's dynamic.  Years ago, I used a map to show farmer who changing from regular farming practices to conservation practices could help them to keep their soil in place.  It was more powerful than a conservationist telling him we need to do it because it is my opinion.  A map is a very powerful tool to show people or get the point to people.

Thank you all for your responses! I will use the links you have sent for next weeks presentation and continue to help others understand the importance of technology especially GIS within an organization.

Your welcome, that is great Michael! I would love to hear how GIS expands within your organization. There are also a lot of examples about GIS Careers here

I wanted to come up with a humorous example for introducing ArcGIS Pro to our users....any ideas? The scenario I've landed on just does some basic mapping to identify a new location for Starbucks....not very funny. Joseph....you seem like a funny guy...any suggestions?

Thanks Sharon.   Actually there IS a data set on Starbucks that I have used ... here it is - http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=ec6fe7b6dacc4c91ba89f1eb7a9df217   You could bring it into Pro and run some spatial statistics, mean center, hot spot analysis, and so on. That might be a nice data set to use.

Here is another one I have used -- Food Expenditures at home vs away from home - http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=b69d3dbfe28b4bf89a92a2e431b9ab7a

When I teach GIS, we always have an end of course project where the students have to work on a GIS project. I always encourage the student to work on a map of something that they like.  I don't know why I always remember the map of the location of the "Hello Kitty" stores in the West USA.  She was a huge collector of Hello Kitty stuff and why not?  By the way, she even called all of the stores and got an idea of the size of the store and use a Hello Kitty logo-sized based to show the location.

In other words, engage them by doing something that they like.

Well...university students do like coffee! Lol. Maybe my idea isn't so bad after all. Here's my tutorial https://brocku.ca/library/wp-content/uploads/sites/51/MDG-Intro-to-ArcGISPro.pdf
