Break single polygon feature apart

I am trying to break a giant feature into multiple features. It's a roads polygon feature class for an entire city, and I need it broken into individual roads.  I am a bit perplexed by this simple problem and I can't seem to crack it, any help or ideas with this would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried the "explode" tool in the advanced editing toolbar. I don't know if this will work for you or not though, because I don't know if the roads are one continuous feature, or multiple parts to begin with. Worth a shot though.

If the explode solution doesn't work you might try planarizing your roads.
