Thomas, I noticed the Esri coordinate transformation was WGS84 -> NAD83. I assume this is an on-the-fly transformation from the native Esri coordinate? But my Civil 3D file coordinate is set correctly, and no transformation is toggled.

Thomas, Thank you for your reply. I find the methods for locating the project and applying a location are no better than those in ArcGIS Pro, which shift the image due to scale and image center. Not sure why I would want to "move" an image that is coordinate correct using either tool. However, the basic in-house MAP feature on the geolocation tab is good enough for now, though I think it could use better image quality. If there is more explanation about a CAD map location or comments on the ArcGIS Pro maps, I am all ears. Thanks again for your feedback. First chance, I will spend more time with it to better understand.

Hello, Trying to export maps so they import into Civil 3D to the correct coordinate location. A zoomed-out location map locates a mile or two south of the zoomed-in vicinity map, but with the same coordinates. This was a simple process with ArcMap, but not so simple with ArcGIS Pro. Can someone explain the best method for exporting my GIS map to fix this issue?

Hello, I found some discrepancies while converting datums in ArcMap and NOAA transformation Tools (https://geodesy.noaa.gov/NCAT/). The easting seems to match but Northing is approximately 3ft off. I used NAD 1983 (2011) (US Feet) Delaware State Plane in both conversions. Can someone help me to understand the reason for this discrepancy?

Hello, I have been learning Transformation concepts working with matrix algebra to develop a basic 2d conformal transformation calculator in excel. The scale is developed as a relationship between line segment lengths between one coordinate system and another. But my question is concerning the concept of scale as it relates to a survey perspective that scale in a transformation is used to change between grid and ground. It is my understanding that the two scales are different; one derived from a line segment length ration, and the other based on the earth radius, resulting in two different scales and two different processes that use these scales. I wonder if someone can confirm my understanding above, or if a reference could be recommended that may explain the differences between the two scales.

Robert, I noticed that the course titles that come up with a search for ArcScene, does not show the term "ArcScene". The titles do have "3D" in the title language, which I assume is interpreted as ArcScene or ArcGIS Pro? By the way: yes, your response is very helpful, thanks for that!

Hello, I have ArcScene 10.4.1. I researched the Esri University courses for ArcScene, but not finding any courses related to ArcScene. Anyone have a link or suggestions why I cannot find information on ArcScene? There is some on YouTube but would prefer to go thru Esri for the training if possible. Is ArcScene getting phased out, is why there is no Esri information available?

Hello, I am using ArcMap 10.4.1 and ArcScene 10.4.1. I tried to create a "stacked profile" in ArcScene, using a shape file for the profile line, and adding the surfaces, I do not get a successful profile, but errors. Then I tried importing the surfaces (3d tiff images) into ArcMap, but cannot get the "interpolate line" tool to create a line feature as my profile line. Also, the button to create a profile from line, is grayed-out. What am I likely missing here? I have several profiles I need to cut and cannot seem to get successful results. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hello, I am using ArcScene 10.4.1. I am looking for a white paper on cutting a profile thru a 3d surface in ArcScene. Also a quick tutorial on how to use ArcScene. I am following a few you tube videos but would like to see if there is something from the source that would be better, more comprehensive.

Thanks for your response Melita. Your understanding is correct. I have been studying the concepts and trying to follow the math derivations to better understand. Some of the variables I can see performing a separate least squares calculation, such as variance and covariance in a weight matrix. But there appears to be several variables, not enough equations, and no clear correlation to variables in least squares, or which variables of least squares are represented in the Transformation mathematics. In using the Helmert method, there are several iterations, to start by setting provisional values to zero as a valid assumption. But it is not clear how to progress the iterations, and which variables are strictly least squares and which are isolated by transformation algebra. I was hoping you may know a text reference or similar that would explain these details more clearly. Thanks again for your expertise on these subjects.

Hello, I am using ArcMap 10.4.1. My question does not pertain directly to ArcMap, but to an excel 3d similarity transformation calculator I am attempting to develop. I am using a decent text reference (Datums and Map Projections, by JC Iliffe) that gives me 4 of the matrix (vector) relationships but, beyond setting the provisional values to zero as a first approximation, I am unclear what additional assumptions are being made to solve all the variables such as rotations about each axis, lambda, etc.. My example is not a 3d Helmert 7 parameter type, which I would actually prefer. So I have to ask, does anyone have a 3d Helmert 7 parameter transformation example that has a little more detail beyond the first assumption to assist in solving?

Thanks Melita and everyone for your thoughtful responses. It appears that the NGS tools will convert from northing-easting (projected grid) and provide lat-long in a true geographic format (non-projected location). I am surprised to find engineers requesting lat-long in conjunction with northing-easting values. This makes me think of mixing coordinate formats, not sure it makes any sense to do that. I would assume that most engineers probably do not know what they are asking for when requesting coordinates in northing-easting, as well as, lat-long format. Is it a common practice to provide both formats for a coordinate location, one projected and one non-projected as geographic?

Hello, I am using Arc Map 10.4.1. I am at odds with the terminology of "Geographic" coordinate and inquire for a better understanding. I have heard many interpretations of this term. Such as: a datum is geographic if one is using lat-long coordinates. Which I have always assumed belong to a "round" earth. However, there are graticules associated with a flat map, that I believe, sometimes have lat-long, such as along the edges of a quad map. When viewing graphics set to a coordinate system like Arc Map, I understand that the geographic coordinate is actually flat, but allows 3d data to be added to the map. But with a cad application like AutoCAD, the opposite is true, one cannot add data to a geographic coordinate, but rather, must be in a projected one such as a state plane, to add 3d data. I find the subject somewhat confusing and look to Esri for some explanation of this "Geographic" concept. So I have ot ask, is it possible to have geographic coordinates for a flat map, as well as a 3d datum, and is the term really just another way to refer to a lat-long coordinate format?

Is NAD83 (2011) the only horizontal datum tied specifically to geoid 12b, or are there others that have strong ties to geoid12b or other vertical datums? I am trying to narrow down the guess work to know what a likely vertical datum could be for a particular coordinate system, such as UTM83.
