Good job - it's very important for ALL users of  ArcGIS Enterprise software versions 10.3.x and below to be considering an upgrade strategy, as ArcGIS 10.2.x is already in mature support, and 10.3.x will be going into mature support in December 2018. When a product reaches mature support, patches and service packs are no longer built for that version. HTTPS is enabled at the web tier, but it's not enabled at the GIS tier (at least when I checked just now). Because of this, when the web adaptor attempts to proxy the HTTPS request to the GIS Server, the TLS chain is invalidated. Attempts to get a token should *ALWAYS* be sent using HTTPS. Without additional context I'm unsure I can speak to why sometimes printing works and sometimes not - I'd have to see the app in action.
