ArcGIS for Desktop will read *.mdb databases natively in the software. Just make a folder connection to the C: drive or where it's stored. Create a new file geodatabase and drag/drop the tables from the Access to the file geodatabase. Creating a db connection is for ArcSDE geodatabases... Regards, Robert LeClair Esri-Denver

Julii, Great question! I would strongly encourage you to pursue your GIS career as it's one of the more stable professions out there and there's quite a bit of career growth. You are correct that ArcInfo Workstation and AML have gone the way of the dinosaur but you have a solid GIS foundation upon which to build. I would recommend several things: Learn ArcGIS for Desktop: There are several tutorial books from Esri Press that will assist you with self paced training. The first is GIS Tuturial 1: Basic Workbook 10.1 Edition.. There are GIS Tutorials 2 and 3 to build upon as well. Request a free 60-day evaluation copy of ArcGIS for Desktop or better yet invest in the ArcGIS for Home Use Program ($100 for Desktop Advanced plus many extensions). Use the Home Use Program to build your skills. Learn all about ArcGIS Online and create a free Public account to build online maps. Find and get involved in an Esri User Group to network, build skills. Look over the GIS Jobs Clearinghouse to see what kind of jobs are out there and how much they're paying. Don't forget the Esri also hires entry level positions as well! Search for internship opportunities within the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Volunteer your GIS skills to build them. Develop a LinkedIn profile to build your online resume - use it to network within the GIS community. Since you're interested in San Diego, the Esri International Users Conference is in 1 week! Kind of last minute I know, but you will be amazed by 14,000+ GIS professionals from all walks of life using ArcGIS. Again, perfect networking opportunity. The following suggestion should resolve the issue: 1. Open Internet Explorer-> Tools->Internet Options->Connections-> LAN Settings and turn off "Automatically detect settings." Other Suggestions 1. Navigate to Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs->Select ArcGIS Explorer for Desktop ->Uninstall/change->Repair. 2. Try to ensure that you have the most current display driver installed on your client machine. Open Control Panel > Device Manager. Expand Display Adapters. Right click the adapter below this > Properties. Go to the Driver tab > Update Driver > Search Automatically. Timothy - A few questions for you: 1. By chance, is the Feature Class stored in a Feature Dataset? If so, did you alter the projection of the Feature Dataset recently? How? May be related to NIM084357. 2. Do you have any relates and/or attachments created on this feature class? If so, remove the elements, load the data, and rebuild the elements. Sounds like it could be related to "#NIM009568 Spatial joins involving nearest and intersect feature searches are slow to execute." As a workaround, break the data up into subsets or convert your data to file geodatabase feature classes and see if that speeds up the spatial join.

Hmmm...to my knowledge not with core software but I could be mistaken. I did find the ARIS GRID Editor for ArcMap at http://www.aris.nl/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=210:aris-grid-editor-for-arcmap&catid=64:arcgis-tools&Itemid=161 that would do what you want. Sam - If you have the Spatial Analyst extension, you could use the CON geoprocessing tool. For example, I have an elevation surface as my input conditional raster. I create a SQL expression of VALUE = 1000. If this evaluates as TRUE, calculate the input constant value as 1001. Else the SQL expression evaluates as false, then return the original elevation surface cell value. The tool will create a new output raster. Make sense? Regards, Robert LeClair Esri-Denver

Christian - The Raster to MrSID tool was available at version 9.3.1, but removed at version 10.0. It is not possible to export raster data to MrSID image format in ArcGIS 10.1. Check out LizardTech's website to see if they may have some plug-ins for ArcGIS Desktop that would allow you to export to MrSID. You do have some options: 1. If you know of someone with an Advanced license, then perhaps they may convert the feature class for you. 2. There is ET Geowizard from http://www.ian-ko.com/ that has a free function of line to polygon. Convert the polygon to line in ArcGIS, then apply the line to polygon in ET Geowizard. 3. Upgrade to an Advanced license (probably not what you want to hear...) Hope this helps!

I found a possible solution - select the polygon in question and run the "Feature to Polygon" GP tool. This should reorder the vertices. What is the result? Please advise.

You may want to examine the "Repair Mosaic Dataset" geoprocessing tool. It allows you to redefine the new path for the moved raster datasets within a mosaic dataset. Regards, Robert LeClair Esri-Denver
