Sorry if this is a stupid question but I searched and read many things and simply can't find an answer on this. I know that I can view related tables in eSearch widget, but can I search data within the related tables (relationship class in this case) and therefore select the related feature based on that search using this widget? thanks!

I can't be sure this would help or not. I just experimented by starting over with a new topology without any rules and apparently the creation of the topology itself is what causes things to move and the vertices to be created at each point feature along the line. So it would seem that topology is not the answer after all if there is no way to prevent this from happening. Maybe there is some other functionality that will accomplish this? Any other suggestions? I don't know what other details to give you that I didn't already say above. All of this is done only so that I can move features as one....or at least make it easier to fix the features that didn't move. Thanks

Hello, I'm having trouble getting a topology, or geometric network, to work the way I want it to and I was hoping someone had a suggestion. I have a sewer line layer, a manhole point layer, and another point layer that is connections to that sewer. I created a geometric network so that when I move a manhole (to update accuracy in field) the line moves with it. The lines have endpoints or vertices at each manhole only, not at each connection. The problem is that when I move something, the connections do not move with it. Adding the connections to the geometric network creates vertices there and that doesn't work since the line from 1 manhole to another is a straight line...so no vertices in between. My next attempt was to replicate the data in the network and create a topology that would (hopefully) show me, or fix, all of the connections that are not snapped to the lines. After that I could then synchronize the replica back. The problem is that the only rule I found that makes any sense for this issue is "point must be covered by line", but that moves the line and creates a vertex at every connection (i apparently have many un-snapped connections already without having moved any manholes yet). I want to move the connection to the line and have no vertex. Is this possible? Any other options for doing this? Thanks!

Thanks. Although I can't enable archiving I can still enable sync afterall. So I should be good. The replication should be useful as well since I am hoping to do a topology on the same data.

I've looked into geometric networks and am having issues getting it working (incorrect edit version type?) but before I press on with solving the issues, I have a concern. It appears as though archiving is not possible on the geometric network data. The reason I want the networked data is to use it in a feature service for editing in Collector and I need sync enabled. In order to enable sync, archiving needs to be enabled as well. Does this mean that this data cannot be used in this way then? Thanks

Thanks. I'll check that out. I was under the impression that that required the Network Analyst extension but it doesn't appear so after browsing through quickly. I suppose I got hung up on the "relationship class" from something I heard once and thought that was the answer I was looking for. Thanks

Hello, I've been doing a ton of reading on creating relationship classes in order to do something in particular but I still feel like I don't understand it and can't seem to make it work. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction? I want to have 2 layers, sewer manholes and sewer pipes, related so that if I move a manhole, the vertex from the pipe that is snapped to it moves as well. First, is a relationship class how this is done? In my reading it would appear so but I never actually saw any instructions on how to make this specific functionality happen after the relationship class is created. At this time, I do not want anything else to happen as far as the data itself being linked, just be able to move features together. I suppose I was expecting some sort of model builder of sorts that would allow me to say something like "link layer A and layer B by vertex. if feature in layer A moves, move coincident vertex in layer B" but after creating the relationship class I have no idea what the next step is. Apparently I'm either doing something wrong or a relationship isn't the appropriate way to do this task. Any advice? Thanks!

Well it looks like a ran into more snags. Maybe you can help? I just installed Portal and I can't authorize it. I got the download from My ESRI...as an apparent part of Server...however, when I try to authorize with my Server key it doesn't work. I don't see a separate key for Portal available. What am I missing here? I can't find any information online about this. Also, after lots of reading I found something that said that I can't have Web Adapter configured for both Server and Portal. But I currently have it setup so that the public can access my flex application and Server services. Naturally I do not want this to change, but if I configure Web Adapter to work with Portal I would lose this no? I want the public to continue to do things as they currently do but want Portal ONLY for Collector. I have no other use of it at this time. What do I do about this? Thanks!

Thank you for the suggestion regarding Portal. I hadn't looked at that before because I thought it was another piece of software to buy and we really don't have need of it but after a quick look I see that it is included with Server and I could use it just for this purpose, which would be great. I will do further reading and get it installed but this may be the best way to go! Thanks

I've been doing a ton of research and testing into what platform for mobile (tablet or phone) editing I'd want to get into for our uses and am having trouble figuring it out. I had to do a ton of work on my data to do the testing just to be sure I fully evaluate everything as well but I think I need input to help decide. I have about 5 users that need to access some feature layers for editing in the field. We have Server and the Flex web app in place already for viewing but need something for mobile editing. I believe my options are the following: Collector - This app seems best, however it requires a license for each user for AGO. This is quite expensive and seemingly unnecessary when we already have Server. Basic Mobile App - The app is very basic. There's no snapping and the mobile server in Server only allows one app so I can't have multiple apps created for different needs. However, it is free, available for all platforms, and not tied to AGO at all which is a big positive. Windows Mobile - I have a hell of a time getting this set up and it still seems very clunky. There's a lot of prep in creating the projects, dealing with basemaps, packaging/loading data. Also, it appears to be end-of-life. No more updates so it's going to disappear...but yet it still isn't free. It's a one-time cost that is much more reasonable than AGO for Collector. Will there be a replacement or will we all eventually be forced into AGO regardless of if we are already invested in Server and not interested in a annual fee? (a fee that is higher than Server itself yet annual? makes no sense) ArcPad - I don't know much about this but it seems pretty much like Windows Mobile but would require custom hardware. Custom app - Although I'd like to learn to do this, I simply don't have that ability at this time so it isn't an option. Flexviewer - This is already existing and can be used via a browser (at least on a Windows tablet - not Android or iOS). It seems to lack snapping (but I haven't researched this fully yet) and doesn't seem to want to recognize my coded value domains (displays just a text box instead of dropdown - though it supposedly should work). The biggest issue is the inability to use the device GPS while using the application. It sure seems like ESRI is working on forcing everyone to go to AGO. I am opposed to it due to the large price tag that will continue in perpetuity. Not to mention that it has less functionality/customization to offer in general and is hard to swallow when you already invested in Desktop and Server. I feel like there is no good option, they each have major negatives. So my questions are: Is my summation of each option accurate? Is there anything else I should take into consideration with each of those? Are there other options I haven't thought of? What is your suggestion on the best way to go? let me know if you need more information from me. Thanks for any input you can offer!

I appreciate the responses. I still can't say I understand the point of all of this though. To me, the only purpose is to ask questions (or have discussions) and help others. This was easy to do before and logical. Probably due to just the familiarity of how forums work, but there really wasn't anything to learn. Now however, even after reading things you guys linked, I still do not see the advantages to making those two tasks so much more difficult. I wanted to post a question, and simply didn't know where to put it in this new format. Apparently tags are what are more important than where to put it?....so I then have to figure out what tags apply to my question and if I get it wrong no one will see my question? Why is this better than just putting it in a sub-forum? While I'm here I try to spend a little time seeing if I can answer any questions. Usually I'm within a sub-forum, or go into one on a topic I'm familiar with, and then browse the threads. Well now I simply have difficulty finding links to the sub-forums at all and just don't see a logical way to do what I want to do. Based on what I read the way to do this now is to subscribe to a particular tag or something? Well that doesn't help me at this particular moment, nor do I want to get emails for everything either. I don't even see where to filter posts by tags anyway... I'm sure I'm missing something yet, and I believe that my disconnect is simply how my brain works, or expects the workflow to be, but I thought maybe if I explained what it is like from my perspective that it would help...or I would better learn how to navigate this since honestly right now I simply don't want to use it.

The frustration I get every time I try to use this new "forum" continues to reach new heights! SOOOOOO difficult to use. You come here for 2 reasons, to browse a sub-forum to help others, or to post a question into a particular sub-forum. Both of these tasks are very difficult to do now! I need to ask a question regarding ArcMap or ArcGIS Desktop....and there is no "forum" for this application!!!??? It's the flagship product and I have no way to ask a question about it? I am getting so freaking disgusted by GeoHell I don't even want to come on here anymore. Add a damn sub-forum for this...presumably under GIS > Applications, since it doesn't fit anywhere else in this convoluted mess.

I'm still working through all of this on my end but had another question or two I thought you might be able to help me with. In order to go the EGDB route I need to upgrade my desktop license so I'm weighing that against using AGO for hosted feature services. The problem is that in order to use Collector, and therefore AGO, it appears that I'll have to add more "members" to my organization, and that ends up being more costly than the desktop upgrade (either option may simply be too costly for us) despite having the negative of not being connected directly to my data since it would be housed on AGO. But if I upgrade desktop to use EGDB's, and create feature services, then it still doesn't allow me to use Collector due to users needing to login to AGO instead of connecting directly to our Server. Is there something I'm missing here? Is there some alternative to these 2 options for enabling editing in the field? Are there other decent app options? ArcPad? Thanks for the help

Thanks for the response! Is there any way, other than the hosted feature service, to use AGO for this and avoid needing to do an enterprise GDB? Is there a way to use Collector without AGO? AGO didn't seem like a viable option for me due to the forced basemaps that do not allow you to zoom in far enough. I'm sure I have many other questions but I'll get to reading! Thanks!
