Yes - Think of the output raster as a point feature class (points are at the cell centers) - input points and equation - used to make predictions at these "rasterized" points - each output raster cell gets its value from the prediction made at the cell center location Steve

Are your input points located at the cell centers of your output raster? The cell center is where the prediction is being made. Steve

Guy We fixed a performance issue in 10SP2. What inputs do you have? Any chance of applying SP3 or sending me the data (slynch@esri.com)? Thanks Steve

Christi TopoToRaster is based on a 3rd party piece of software, anudem (http://fennerschool.anu.edu.au/research/publications/software-datasets/anudem). It is based on thin plate splines and is in most cases not an exact interpolator. If more than one spot height or contour line is present within a cell then averaging is done. You should therefore make sure that you pick the correct or representative cell size. TopoToRaster is also computationally intensive and the largest output raster is roughly 36 million cells. If a larger raster is required the MARGIN parameter can be used. With all this said, I've had a quick look at the Hawaii contours and some of them are 50 ft apart. Hope this helps. Steve

You can also, if multiple geostatistical layers are in ArcMap, right click on a geostatistical layer and choose Compare.

Could you zip the input DEM and email it to slynch@esri.com ? or External users who need to FTP a file to Esri should be instructed to login to ftp://ftp.esri.com/ using the anonymous login and providing their e-mail address as the password if prompted (Note: Most browsers and FTP clients will log in using the anonymous account automatically). Once connected, the external users should navigate to the pub/incoming folder, create directories as needed and upload their content. Thanks Steve

Which version of ArcGIS? - If 10, do you have Service Pack 3 installed? - output going to shapefile or file geodatabase? - what happens with a larger contour interval? Thanks Steve

If you are using ArcGIS 10 you could write a short Python script see http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//00300000000z000000.htm Steve

Christi Data are available from various sources, eg. http://hawaii.wr.usgs.gov/hawaii/data.html TopoToRaster has 6 input data types, PointElevation, Contours, Streams, Sinks, Lake and Boundary. Boundary will clip the result. Also, you have to make sure that a representative output cell size is used. Steve

Paul As far as the crash is concerned, please contact Esri Support or email me (slynch@esri.com) the data and the parameters that you are using and which version of ArcGIS. As far as which interpolator to use. I would suggest some initial exploratory analysis. Use the CreateSubsets GP tool to create a training and testing subset. Also look at cross validation. Regards Steve

There is a huge difference between the barrier option and using the MASK. IDW's barrier option uses a "line of sight" method to determine which points will be used in the interpolation. I.e if I can see you, I'll use you. The barrier also has infinite height. MASK on the other hand is done after the fact. I.e after the interpolation is done the area is clipped or masked. Spatial Analyst has 2 interpolation methods that use barriers. Geostatistical Analyst, from Version 10, also has 2 barrier interpolators and these use a non-Euclidean distance approach. Hope this helps. Steve

Ted We introduced the new Wizard in 10. The reason it stays on top is to ensure that it does not get "lost". I.e. it gets moved off the page or something else gets on top of it. Also, because it is an interactive tool, it should be the focus of attention. I.e. Add Field tool can be run before or after the Wizard is used. We do take note of your concerns and we'll see if we could change it in some or other way. To change the order of which field comes first. Setting the field to be used is not a Geostats function but an ArcGIS function and it has been around for a while. - Right click on the Feature layer in the TOC - click on Layer and then on the Display tab - under the Display Expression section select the Field (note for Geostats it must be numeric) - hit OK That field will be the default field in the ESDA tools and also in the Wizard.
