I have used two feature layers with Collector in a manner similar to what you are attempting. Both features were created with all service options selected (Create, Delete, Query, Sync and Update). When creating the map, the first feature layer allowed editing. For the second feature, editing was disabled (this option is in the section where you configure the map's pop-ups). You should then be able to go in to the Properties section of your map (where you set delete protection, extent, etc.) and set the application settings to use a find location query by layer using the second (non-editable) layer. If items in the second layer hamper editing, the Collector menu allows the user to turn the layer off/on as needed

Is there a way to set up a Collector map so that you do not have to scroll across all the continents when gathering data near +/- 180 longitude? Thanks.

When setting the "Details" of you map in AGOL, there is a set of drop-down options for each layer that includes the choices "Configure Pop-up" and "Disable Editing". To disable only some fields, select the "Configure Pop-up" option, and then click on the "Configure Attributes" link. You will see a menu that lets you check the fields you want to display and edit. Uncheck the fields where you want to disable editing. Note: The "Disable Editing" and "Configure Attributes" check boxes to selectively allow editing are only visible if the layer's properties have been set-up to allow editing in the "My Content" section.

The feature's fields that can be displayed or edited are set up in the "Configure Popup" section for each editable layer in the AGOL map view. When you have the Pop-up Properties displayed, click on the "Configure Attributes" link. You can then select the fields to display or make editable. Just deselect editing for the fields you do not want users to edit. I will typically prevent users from editing some fields while allowing them to view what is in the field. This will work in the off-line mode. I will also add a "Notes" field where users can enter comments when the non-editable fields may need to be reviewed by an administrator.

Joe, Symbology by a single attribute is supported. I wanted to use multiple attributes, which is not supported. Basically, I wanted to use one field to set the shape of the symbol and a second field to set the color of the symbol. As a simple example, Field1 would contain either "circle", "square" or "triangle" and Field2 would contain either "yellow", "red" or "green". However, since my set of symbols and colors is small (9 in my example), I can put them all in one field. Values 1-3 would use a circle, 4-6 a square and 7-9 a triangle. Then 1 would be a yellow circle, 2 a red circle and 3 a green circle., etc. For a lot of colors and shapes, using two fields would better organize the choices for the user. Thanks.

Joe, thank you for the topic link. It contains helpful information. Symbology using multiple attributes (or quantify by category) is not supported in map services such as AGOL and Collector as it can affect drawing performance.

Can the symbology in a collector map use two fields or more to determine shape and color of a point? For example, one field would contain a type category (A, B or C) and another field would contain a status ( Yes, No, Unknown). For a small group of types and status, I typically combine them into a single field for Collector and use that field for the symbol. In ArcMap I would set the symbol color and shape using multiple attribute fields.

Jerry: Use the append tool. It looks like you have completed the first two steps that I use for this process. 1: Create a geodatabase with domains and a feature class that matches your point data file, and 2: Convert spreadsheet data into a point file. The next step is to append the point data to the empty feature class. Open the empty feature class and the point file in ArcMap. Use the append tool found in the toolbox: Data Management Tools > General > Append. The point file will be the input dataset, and the empty feature class will be the target. For Schema Type, I usually select NO_TEST. The Field Map control sets how data is transfered from the point file to the feature class. Click on Show Help >Tool Help for additional information on this tool. Once appended, take a look at the attribute table of your feature class to make sure everything appended correctly and edit fields if needed. The point file can then be removed from your map document. Finish tweaking, then share it as a service on AGOL. Hope this helps.

Recently I had some issues with the Android version of Collector when using date/time formats that displayed seconds. Since this was corrected in the 10.2.6 Android update, I left the "12/21/1996 6:00:00 PM" formatting in one of my maps. However, this setting limits the iPad version of Collector to only enter the date when updating this field; the time option is no longer displayed. When I set the "12/21/1996 6:00:00 PM" time/date format to "12/21/1996 6:00 PM" (removing the seconds), the iPad version then allows the user to update both date and time. The Collector version for iPad being used is 10.2.5.

Russell, Thank you for your assistance. On a couple of my date/time fields, I had selected pop-up formats that included seconds (12/21/1998 6:00:00 PM and 12/21/1998 18:00:00). Selecting a format that did not include seconds allowed the map to work with the current Android version. (Per Russell's comment, this issue is being addressed.) For the iOS version of Collector, using the seconds in the pop-up format caused no problems.

Russell, I just got word from one of the staff that he can see the new map series on his iPad. So the issue may be related to the recent web updates to AGOL and/or Android. Randy

Russell, You should have permission. The map “Strata 2 – Fairbanks” and feature layer “Inspection_Strata2”, works in Collector. The almost identical “Strata 6 – Southeast” and “Inspection_Strata6” shows up in Collector but won’t load. Thank you for checking this out. Randy

I have added some new maps to ArcGIS Online. They show up in the Collector apps directory, but when I click to load them I get: "Unable to load the map. Please try again." My older maps still show up and load into Collector properly. My latest maps use the same setup as a previous one. When I examine the layer properties and JSON settings, the settings look identical (only layer name and extent settings vary). I am using the Android version of Collector. I've tried reinstalling Collector. Any suggestions?

With Russ' help, I was able to come up with a solution. When I created the database, I had set a few fields to a default value. When the Feature Type was changed, those fields with a default setting would delete the current value and use the default. Fields with no default value setting would retain the current value. I deleted the default settings and reposted the feature class to AGOL.
