Yes, realizing that Direct Connect is required is the key to unravel the chicken-egg conundrum of an ArcGIS upgrade of an application server before it can be started. - V

Starting with ArcSDE 10.0, all upgrades which involve ArcSDE instances with geodatabase functionality must be done from an ArcGIS client (Python or ArcCatalog GUI). The documentation covers upgrade procedures. - V

Mean time between failures (MTBF) is a key component in availability calculation. If you remove an unnecessary component, you remove any possibility of its failure, which increases reliability. Using Direct Connect to Oracle will not provide high availability without RAC, but it will provide higher availability than a redundant ArcSDE application server could, and it does it without the complexity of a redundant system for a component that isn't designed to support it. - V

You need to use the appropriate syntax for direct connect ("-i sde:Oracle10g"). It sounds like you really need to contact Tech Support to work out the multiple issues with your connect environment. - V

Have you tried rebuilding the base table's spatial index? Have you tried using 'sdetable -o update_dbms_stats'? SQL-Server is tempermental when it comes to index statistics. Do you have any plans to upgrade your ArcSDE release? [9.2 is getting long in the tooth, and most of the databases it supported are at or beyond end-of-life.] - V

Revoking SELECT ANY TABLE will only work if it was granted in the first place. It's far more likely that GRANT SELECT ON table TO PUBLIC has been granted by the other table owner, or that the "tables" aren't tables, but instead are feature datasets, which are visible to all users. What version or Oracle are you using? Is Application Express (APEX) installed? What version of ArcSDE are you using? Have you applied any service packs? What are the names of some of the visible tables? Do they have the "expode" symbol (+) next to them? - V

Esri and VMware have a Deployment Guide which contains performance statistics from 2009. Our disk options were not as performant, and the result was reflected in our evaluation. The ArcGIS Server Blog has guidelines for ArcGIS Server virtualization. The way to get higher availablility out of ArcSDE is to use Direct Connect (the MTBF for an unused component is infinity). A failover configuration for the application server should only be considered as a short term solution to get all your clients to the same release (or at least to those for which DC is an option) [and, IMHO, probably isn't worth the bother -- our failover provisions caused more downtime than any other cause]. - V

Make sure you can access the server from the server, then use the server tnsnames.ora from the client. You would need to allow traffic on the listener port if a firewall is enabled. - V

If TNSPING and SQL*Plus can't connect, there's little chance that ArcGIS will. You need to configure your client tnsnames.ora file with an HOST that points to the Oracle server and a SERVICE_NAME that specifies the ORACLE_SID. The Net Configuration Assistant utility can help (I generally copy tnsnames.ora from the server). To make your life easier, be sure that you only have one Oracle client installed (use the 10.2.0.3 known to be compatible with Windows 7). - V

First off, what versions (and service pack) of software (database, ArcSDE, ArcGIS) are you using? What does 'sdelayer -o describe_long' report on both the base spatial table and view? Have you tried rebuilding the spatial index on the base table? Does that change the 'sdelayer' description output? - V

You can't build an index on a view. Views exploit the indexes of the base table(s). If the base table has a spatial index, the optimizer is able to use it. - V

As stated previously, the project was done under non-disclosure. The three-member test team had a combined fifty years of GIS/IT experience, twenty years of rigorous test experience, and more than ten years with the VM application in use. We were fully aware of the issues and did our best to optimize VM performance with the hardware previously selected for the project. We had to present our results to an engineering review board that *really* wanted us to select VMs for all components. In the end, our results were consistent with Esri support policy on virtual architecture -- Works okay in test environments, but not recommended for production use. - V

The ArcSDE application server does not stop when unused. I've found that it can be sluggish to respond initially when unused for months, but that's more a factor of the database itself having been swapped out. - V
