I have a class working on story maps about the economics of tourism in our area. Students have taken many of their own pictures to upload into their Storymap journal template. One student's photos keep uploading sideways. Help!

His pictures were uploaded into his computer and are in the correct position in the folder on his computer but when he tries to upload them into the side panel of the template, they are sideways. I've tried renaming the photo, editing the photo and no matter, it keeps uploading sideways! Any ideas on how to correct this problem? Many thanks!

Hi Deborah

Sorry about the issue. I have seen this now and then with some images and it is indeed super frustrating when it happens, especially as I've not been able to figure out why this happens. I don't think this is specific to Story Maps. For example I've had people email me a pic taken with an iPhone that ends up sideways if I save it and then forward it in an Outlook email. I think it is some odd internal metadata thing about the actual file itself. My workaround is to create a new image file by taking a screenshot of the errant image the correct way up, rather than try and modify/edit the original file.

Thanks so much for the suggestion. That is a great idea. I occurred a few more times but for most of the images, we were able to make a copy of the image, make a small edit of it and save it as a different name and it worked. I'll tuck away that idea for next time, just in case. Thanks again!
