Python scripting is a great way to automate GIS tasks and create custom menus and add ins for ArcGIS for Desktop. You can learn a lot about Python by going through the tutorials in the new book from Esri Press | GIS Tutorial for Python Scripting |.
This post might be more useful if posted in the Python 'space', rather than the general 'Developers' space. Good link though.
